i found this (http://www.vwparts.net/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=MB16-3157&Category_Code=BRAKE_LINES_AND_HOSES&Store_Code=VWP) while searching for a cheap brake proportioning valve for my car. i suspect that since its caked with rust, that it won't last, or is already gone. now a new one costs about $104.92+tax. so why not get an adjustable one at a cheaper price? now with shipping and duty etc, it will probably still cost me about $60, but thats way cheaper.
any thoughts? this could also help anyone switching to rear disc and trying to find the right proportion of braking...

Just my opinion: apples and oranges. :wink:
That's a brake bias valve that lets you statically set the balance between the front and rear braking system... useful for race cars, off-road vehicles, sand rails, etc.
The OEM VW proportioning valve does the same thing but dynamically... responding to the vehicle load, speed, aggressiveness of braking etc at that moment to adjust the pressure as needed.
The other "gotcha" with the device you've linked to is that it appears to only have a single in and out port. Installation would therefore require you to tie the rear brakes together, defeating the dual diagnal safety braking system your car has (dual brake circuits, one front and one rear brake on each circuit).

exactly why i need to go new :)
i'm kicking myself a bit though because for some reason the autoparts sites were listing a proportioning valve for around $70 or so. then again, maybe i forgot to add .ca to the URL :lol:

Many years ago with my Renault and a bias valve I had just fitted I did some research. Wet tree lined brow of a hill, fortunately I span between all those trees. I didn't enjoy being a passenger whilst my arse was chewing a hole in the seat. :P

Geez, I pay $140 at JOBBER for a Ate regulator in Canada. What/where are you getting for $105???
BTW: what are you trying to accomplish with the new regulator? There are some ways to manipulate it if brake balance is your need.

the reason i need a new one is mine is completely rusted. it might be okay, but my wheel cylinders are in real bad shape, and i doubt the rear proportioning valve is healthy.
