Title: Camshaft or valve
Post by: Golf/Jetta on May 01, 2009, 11:25:56 am
97 1.9L AAZ
Timing belt Slipped off the Inter. Pulley
took the head off
ended up bending two valves with a inter. pulley slipping off
tapped one of the valves with a hammer.
it ended up falling out.. it was just a tap geeez.
Cylinder 2 Exhaust valve bent
Cylinder 4 Exhaust valve bent and broke off with tap
replaced the two valves and checked all the valves out by lathering them
now time to check that inter. pulley.. bolt didn't snap off.. key missing, pulley ok, bolt unscrewed nicely.

put everything together. some new parts
now cylinder 4 won't fire.. tested injector, no compression = 0, piston moves up and down
hmmm later I'll check where the air is going. with an air compressor.

i ended up doing a compression test using a vacumm.. the exhuast pipe sucked my glove with the valves closed¿.. it was the valve i changed!

their was a change in the valves size early 96

maybe the hydraulic lifter is srewed from the impact
only one way to find out before pulling the head.

took the cam off and did an air flow test.
result was no air flow

switched the cam followers with the intake and exhaust of cylinder 4 with same results

giving an hour for the follower to bleed with the cam lob on the exhaust valve, no difference

called around and someone mentioned "when the piston hit the valve the shock got sent up to the lifter (follower) hitting the cam with the lob down. thus making that one lob diffferent on the other side." weird.. i thought the cams were strong too.. and if it warped at that one lob, it would leave a big mark or a crack.

have you compared the new valve against one of the other "good ones"?
any scrape marks on the cylinder wall on #4?

no i didn't compare the valves. that one broke whit a tap
and no scrape mark(s) on the cylinder wall

lesson learned. check everything when the head is off

compared the valve against a new one and they seem the same

its the hydraulic lifters...
