Well my brother blew his car up today, or rather his car blew up on him. I know words are boring so here's the pictures

owie how did all this happen?
-
 wow, that's perdy bad. Any idea what caused it? Was he racing it when it happened? bummer :(
-
Thats how my old 80 rabbit died. Started knocking, drove it for another week, engine ran away at a stop light, BBLLAAAAMMMMO!
Big hole in the oil pan and 4 plus qts of oil running down the street.
Pulled the plates and the VIN tags (and the beer from the trunk). Parked it on the side of the road where it died. Mind you that was many years ago. Wish I knew then what I know now. I would still have a sweet ride.
-
Only time i've seen something like that was on a delivery company golf, which had a kazzillion kms. the relief vale in the oil pump seized, then the filter blew, then blammo !
-
The story as I heard it was my brother was just puttering along down the street delivering pizza when he heard a knocking, then saw some smoke. He pulled over, it made a loud noise and then it just died.
I think it had around 425xxx kms on it but I could be wrong.

I think some JB weld coudl fix that.... :P

and some duck tape
-
and maybe a few zip ties also.
-
as the vultures begin circling the carcass...
all i can say is wow! that is some serious damage!! scary that there weren't really any early warning signs other than needing to pull over and then whamo. i thought damage like that was from driving hard...
so the problem was oil starvation?
-
My guess is it spun a bearing, the rod welded itself to the crank (or piston) and was then forced out the front and back of the block.
This isn't my engine (yet) so no parting out at this time. I do hope to buy it and take it apart for further assesment :)

My guess is a wasted intermediate shaft bearing. I bought a 1985 Jetta TD with an engine that the PO grenaded. Upon further inspection, it had the dreaded flaking int shaft bearing.
-
...thats kinda scary. intermediate shaft bearings are kinda important huh? i totally forgot we need that for our oil pumps.

i've been following a company that was supposedly coming out with an electric oil pump. all information about it is now gone off the site :( so i guess they scrapped the idea...
http://www.emp-corp.com/ however they do sell electric cooling pumps that flow very high volume!! a benefit of running an electric cooling pump is that you can keep it off for the first few minutes of running during very cold starts. this will keep the swirl chamber temps up so that the car doesn't smoke so bad at idle until warmed up, and gradually increase flow as the engine heats up.
-
yea, about that... my car smokes like a *** when its cold. and its got a cold miss starting to develop. maybe i should get a pyro..

just the white/grey smoke right? my old '86 TD used to do that... i think it could have been that the valves needed adjustment. otherwise it ran fine and gave very good mileage (over 1000km/tank)
-
no, it smokes blue like a ***.
-
I took the engine apart today. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary... but maybe someone else's keen eye will catch something.
Pictures to follow when I get home

So here are the pictures.
Nothing was seized ???

This this junk on the head and pistons is related to the veg that this car ran once upon a time?

man, can't imagine what kind of sounds were produced when that block came apart :o
-
Yeah that's the rod. The rest of it is in the piston below it. The pin is fine but there is that crack you can see in the piston leading to the pin. I can't move the part of the rod that is in the piston
-
Kinda looks like the piece of rod in the piston is junda jammed in there agains the inside of the piston skirt? I would have bet on the piston going to pieces before the rod if the wrist pin siezed.. Maybe just a flawed rod?
