Hello, I apologize if you cant here the sound that gets to me everyday...(the clatter in the video kinda drowns out the sound im trying to get across...)
I will try and explain( even though I have had a few beers and im really excited to Sonic Youth in June!)
This sound moves with the idle/acceleration of the engine. (until the little diesel is going to fast and drowns out the sound...)
To me it sounds like a patch of sand paper moving in a circle and only rubbing against one spot once in its revolution. Making a scratching noise... ( that probably doesnt make sense at all, but hey, it was worth a shot...)
New timing belt
New Head
New IP
New tensioner
1979 1.5L diesel
Intermediate shaft?
Not sure, but the car runs great, besides the noise...
Here are a few videos, let me know if you can even pick out the noise over the clatter...
You can here it better in the second video. Also, I have replaced the rubber hose with its proper clear line...

I can hear some sound similar to what you describe, is it possible that the belt is running off slightly and rubbing... Not sure though sound wise, maybe alternator..... You will have to inspect the rotating parts to check them for alignment.

disconnect the accessory belts and take a video of that. its really hard to tell whether its regular v-belt noise or not without being there in person.

Based on the frequency of the noise and how my eye seems to detect the movement of the timing belt I don't think it's timing-belt-related... at least, from thousands of miles away over the interweb.
With rhythmic noises sometimes I put a dab of whiteout on the various pulleys and belts to see if I can catch who's got the beat. Another approach is the process of elimination... pull the water pump belt first, then the alternator belt. If you're left with the timing belt you replace the tensioner and see. Once you find what belt makes the noise go away it's sometimes it's hard to tell what's next if the bearings are only noisy when they are under belt tension.
Here's my interweb prediction... it's too fast a noise to be related to the timing belt (the longest belt) and too slow a noise to be related to the water pump belt (the shortest belt) so my money's on the alternator bushing or fan. :wink:
BTW, I think the real problem is that your engine is too darn clean. :lol:

My friend just returned my tensioner pulley tool. :) So I think tonight I will try and change it out... But I will first run the car with out the V-belt which controls WP and Alternator.
Just to be sure...it will not hurt anything to run the car for a moment without my V-belt right? :shock:

BTW, I think the real problem is that your engine is too darn clean.
Never saw one that clean.
Mine has made that same noise for quite a while now and I've never found it, never looked very hard either though. :roll:

I will second the alternator theory, mine made a similar sound, but you could watch my alt vibrate in time with it.
a mechanics stethoscope could help you find the noise, they work really good for finding annoying little buzzes and stuff like that.

you could probably run the car for a few minutes max at idle without the wp spinning. the car will most likely idle much smoother too as the swirl chambers won't be overcooled.

when my pulley fell off the crank it only ran for about 10 seconds before getting way too hot. You could watch the needle climb and climb. Mind you, it was up to temp at that point.
No harm in running cold w/o water pump for < 30seconds.

Yea I forgot to mention that the engine should be ran bone cold if the wp pulley is disconnected. It could be ran for a minute or so if you keep an eye on the gauge, be enough to hear the noise.

It was the tension pulley.
It was rubbing against the IP pump bracket.
Now I get to hear that beautiful clatter. 8)

Funny thing is she was clean when I got her... ;) Then I went ahead and replaced everything. I do believe the car sat for at least 10 years maybe more...Not sure though.
