OR that engine with a computer to control the timing of the injection AND 1.9L instead! and a zero tolerance engine with swirl chambers in the pistons instead of in the head!!! Direct injection! I'm a GENIUS!!!

Direct injection actually predated indirect injection. IDI was chosen for passenger vehicles because it was quieter and had greater ability to rev higher than a DI diesel did, at what was at the time a very acceptably small loss of efficiency.

Even now, a 1.9TD will rev higher (unmodified) than a 1.9 TDI, and the latter has the fancy computer controlled fuel injection and modern alloys working for it.

I'd love to see a return to IDI with miniscule displacement small diesels (<1L and ~3 cylinders or so) with computerized injection control and modern materials. Almost sounds like an engine suitable for a motorcycle...

Somehow I don't think VW would be in any way concerned with you reviving that kind of copyrighted material  :o

Average speed of 78.75 MPH for 18 days...

It's an EPA conspiracy to enforce copyright.  They don't want us to know that diesels  > hybrids, and VW doesn't want us to know that the '79 rabbit D was more fuel efficient than their current fleet.

So was there a 5-spd tranny available in '79? I get nervous going over 60 in my '79 1.5D 4 speed. 15k miles at 78 mph is impressive, if they used a 4-spd. Or maybe I don't rev mine out nearly as much as I should be... I always seem to shift once-removed from those little orange dots on the speedo, which would tell me that I'm not nearly as high in the rpms as VW intended.

I know what you mean... :D But I do get to 70mph with out even knowing sometimes... I think we under estimate what strength these little 1.5L engines have. But the sound sure is scary.

Every time im on the interstate, im just waiting for the timing belt to shred or to see smoke start bellowing from the back because im drinking coolant from a blown head gasket.

It will never happen though. (im knocking on would as I type this...)
