is it possible to turbo a straight 1.6? ive got a motor in great shape, i juat did the rings, gaskets and valve seals but rust got the best of the floor so the shell of the car is no longer good to me, i did however just pick up a very mint 89 jetta gasser and i was thinking about swaping out the engine next summer so is it possible to turbo the non turbo 1.6 diesel engines? all i can think of is the turbo, the manifold, intercooler oil lines to the turbo but what else would be involved if it is possible? wastegate perhaps?

you're much better off finding a complete 1.6L turbo diesel setup and swapping the works over.
you could try to turbo what you've got but, i wouldn't.

IF you do it the biggest thing you need to watch is exhaust gas temperatures. Especially climbing long grades they can get really high and since the N/A engine doesn't have squirters it cannot cope with the high temperatures as well as the TD engine can. You could end up with melted pistons and/or cooked rings.

you're best bet would be to get a nice small turbo, bigger exhaust, and an IC, and an EGT gauge (and possibly oil temp/pres gauge?)
as long as you don't drive it like an idiot it should hold up.
just remember don't get a big turbo... they take a longer time to spool and usually inrease egt's by a lot more than a small less restrictive turbo such as a K14
and like anyone else will add. Don't mess around too much with fueling if you're going to do this!!!

Eco diesels (1V) and some of the strongest diesels with 80Hp came with K14...

which basically comes back to BlackTieTD's recommendation of trying to find a complete engine. You can definitely try the wreckers, but you'll mostly find the bigger turbo's if any at all.

A Garrett GT15 or KKK K03 would be a better turbo. They use a differet bolt-up arrangment than a K14 or Garrett T2. My Eco has a K14 and its pretty good, but with 15 years on it, 122,000 miles it is starting to weep at the compressor housing, possibly blow-by though.
I have 2 GT15's (no matching manifolds), 1 K03 with 4 matching manifolds and a Garrett T2 with no maching manifold. If you have trouble getting a turbo, i would consider selling one. You'll really need a EGT gauge. Contact Evan at 42 Draft designs.

I've got a 1.6GTD block with melted pistons but n/a pistons are probably of a different alloy also, but it will take a turbo no problem. Fuel it a bit, just dont keep the fuel on when it starts to smoke.

i have a 1.6gtd but is mess...
i can arrange a 1.6D is good shape.are the oil squirters the only difference?can i swap the oil squirters to the 1.6D. my turbo is a KKK24 :?:
