Title: Trying again on a headlight problem.....
Post by: Patrick on April 19, 2009, 08:38:00 am
92 jetta, lost the high beams a while ago. Hit the dimmer switch and the lights go out. Don't have the correct wiring diagram for this car in any of my manuals.

When it happened, I

1) checked the fuses.
2) checked the bulbs (good).
3)Changed out the headlight switch for a known good one (Solved the problem once before on another car).
4) Changed the dimmer switch for a known good one.
Got fed up and quit.

This morning
Power is going through fuses with switch on.  All wires on back of headlight switch hot with switch on. No power in  white and white/black wire at headlights.  Is there a relay in this car somewhere I don't know about? Owner's manual doesn't show one.....

so your wiring is stock. and you have already checked everything..

you've got power to the lights but they still don't come on?? possible ground problem??

No, I DON"T have power at the lights on the high beam circuit, but the low beams work fine.  Just pulled the fuse panel, found the harness that kills the lights when unplugged, white wire is on/off with the dimmer switch. Put it back together, trying to trace under the hood now..........
Any suggestions?

YUp, electrical sucks. Been a good car, but it's getting tough. One more winter in it and it will be picked apart I think. Need to find another good soilid low miles (200,000?) mk 2, preferably a diesel golf to start building the next one...( AAZ,T3, aftercooler, 2.5 straight through exhaust, etc.)
