Title: What exactly is broken?? :\
Post by: VW Scully on August 27, 2005, 08:31:48 pm
Ok here's a little game you can play
My boyfriend went to take my Rabbit work tonight, but ended up needing a tow home cuz he thinks the clutch is broken.
Here's the symptoms:
clutch pedal works fine (hence it's NOT a broken clutch cable)
you can put the car in gear; HOWEVER: you don't GO anywhere when you press the gas! It makes a 'spinning/whizzing' noise and won't go.
I called my mechanic to tell him I would have it towed to his Shop tomorrow (I was going to leave a message, but he was there late tonight) so I talked to him about what it may be.
We have some ideas, but not 100% sure until he can get it on the hoist and look.

So here's the game; what do you guys think it is and then I'll tell you after it's fixed what it WAS! lol  :D (hopefully it'll be done Monday or Tues. and not cost a million bucks)

Either the spline is stripped out of the clutch disc/input shaft or the damper springs have fallen out of the clutch disc allowing the hub to freewheel, one or the other.

Doubtful it will cost a million, but it may be several hundred. Transmission will need to come out to install a new clutch.

Dang it, QuickTD, you beat me to it!

The springs fell out of my '80 Rabbit's clutch when it was 2 years old and it had the same symptoms.
Title: axle bolts

Bolt the inner CV back up.
The boots probably held the bolts in place and none of them broke. At least they didn't when this happened to me.
This time put em in a little tighter.

Nah, you're all wrong. That litle rabbit's got so much horsepower and torque she broke the input shaft clean off! (Just kidding)
I'd bet on the clutch too.
If you're mechanic isn't a volks guy, don't let him forget the two seals and the bushing on the pushrod when he's in there.

Patrick and QuickTD, you guys win the cookie ;)
Yes the clutch is broken :( (but not cuz of the awesome HP of the 1.6 Diesel!) ha ha :D

Patrick: Don't worry, my mechanic is a VW guy with over 30 years experience; he knows what he's doing, but my poor Rabbit has to be in the shop for a few days and I'll be broke when I get her back
