Title: 1000km a week commute on an AAZ
Post by: catlin_cava on March 26, 2009, 02:54:43 pm
In a month for 12 weeks i'll be running 1000km a week on a 97 Golf with a 1.9AAZ. motor rebuild at under 300,000km. car is at 365,000km. Is there anything i should watch out for or do to keep the car from dying on me.

go easy on the car when its cold, and then spank it when its hot...  oh and treat it to some good synthetic oil.  preferrably Total or Lubro Moly (aka liqui moly)

Some audiobooks?

Haha.  I've been driving approx 1000 kms a week for the past 5 months and in some pretty nasty Canadian weather to boot.  I'm sooooo sick of listening to the radio.  It's funny that you say that because I was just going to look for some books on CD.

I've put 33,000 kms on my Jetta since I got it last April.  My advice to you is take care of the car and it will take care of you.  I use synthetic oil so I don't have to change it every month.  I perform regular inspections of everything so I don't get stranded or left with no way to get to work.  You want to be pro-active with repairs.  Change any questionable hoses and belts and carry spares.  Make sure all the required maintenance is done, especially the timing belt.  Check the crank sprocket, and educate yourself on that issue if you don't know about it.

LOL - Yeah, my wasted trip to Halliburton I could not believe the max speed anywhere was 100 kph on the 407 (have not gotten a bill from them yet) and most of the time it was 80 kph. Very slow for a Michigan guy used to going 70 - 79 mph. (113 - 127 kph)

That's a shocker.. lol hey Jon whats the limit on the 401? 100km/h? whats the normal speed? 140km/h?  i have NEVER done the speed limit on the 401 in my life.. i'd get rear ended... I was just down there last week, doing 125-130.. people were still passing me at an alarming rate.. i mean whizzing by.. EVERYONE.. people are WHACK down on the 401 :P

before the legislation that brought into effect automatic vehicle impound for 50km/hr over, it wasn't unheard of seeing people go 180-200 km/h down certain stretches...     i think it was the first guy to ever get his vehicle impounded that only a few days later, got another car impounded...   and still today people drive over 50km/h above the limit.  thats taking a huge chance if you ask me.  they're really cracking down on dangerous driving, especially after those deadly 'accidents'.

thankfully we get a 7% tolerance with regards to the speed.  so if you're going 150km/hr on your spedometer, your car wouldn't be impounded.
i've also heard of the OPP pulling people over for doing 15 over... its just a game really... they blitz to 'try' and scare people, but it doesn't work.

me personally i keep the speed down on my car due to the gearing and fuel economy.  once i get the CTN in there i'll probably see more 120km/h   my old golf with an autobox would scream at 3500 to do about 100km/h and 130-140km/h was about 4000 rpm... once you get into 4k rpm territory, the fuel economy really goes out the window.  pathetic really

"A motorist has been charged with stunt driving after allegedly being clocked by police doing 250 km/h on a Toronto highway.

The driver of a high-performance Infiniti was pulled over early Tuesday morning on Highway 400, just south of Finch Avenue, police said.

OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford told CBC News the driver showed a dangerous disregard for his own safety and other roadway users.

"I think it's insane that someone would even think of going this fast," Woodford said.

The driver faces a maximum $10,000 fine and the gain of six demerit points if convicted. The vehicle was impounded for a week under the province's street-racing legislation."

Heard that one on CBC radio 2 weeks ago...I've got 240+ on the 102 from Halifax to Truro and i'll never do it again...its scary if someone pulls out in front of you....well there wouldn't be much left

i think thats mostly the problem here... there are retards that WILL just pull out in front of a fast moving car, get rear ended and all of a sudden its the driver who rear ends the car in front who is at fault.

the only reason we limit our trucks now to 105km/h (don't get me started on that topic  :x) is because they can't slow down fast enough for the retard in front who just cut him off, else risk jack knifing the whole truck...  i can't wait till we get the virtual driver training systems up and running.  give the driver a good smack when he pulls crap stunts like that.  IMO its just as bad as someone driving too fast, yet they get off scot free and continue to do it.  over in places like Germany, i'm sure they wouldn't put up with that BS.

I find when they clock trucks at 105 it becomes more of a hazard...Go down to the sourthern states where the limits in day ar 85MPH, and being governed at 65mph...

i can't wait till something happens... cars swerving to get around trucks because they're going so slow and then get boxed in and crushed.  imagine a truck trying to merge on some roads going 105km/h???  maybe 110km/h downhill with a tailwind?   most people have tunnel vision where they simply only watch in front of them and don't bother to change lanes to let slow vehicles merge...

I average around 800-1000 Km a week on my car.    I also drive highway 63, Alberta's deadliest highway. The limit is 100KPH, but the average is over 120KPH.

I used to do deliveries in different trucks here years ago. Now that i'm working odd hours, i'm driving in town more during week daylight hours. I couldn't do a delivery job anymore, i'd be in jail within a week for killing someone with my bare hands.

I was on a bus eireann journey from dublin to belfast a week or 2 ago now, they have cameras on the front of the buses and film the entire journey. Must be as a result of what you're discussing here.

Everything over 7.5 ton here is limited to 55mph on motorways, anything with a trailer is 50mph. It all seems to work fine, I sit behind them when on the motorway. The only problems caused are the age it takes to overtake each other. One example the other day was 4 miles!

Most companies around here lock the trucks at 68mph, however there are a few that let the trucks wide open, such as my brother lol, truck/trailer grossing 80,000lbs, Cat C15 Twin Turbo Boosted to 600HP, Straight pipe 6inch dual stacks...Screaming down the highway at 85mph
