No problem... we all get frustrated... and then overjoyed when it does its fine rattle rattle rattle again.  :D

Some questions/things to check:

- was it running and then died, or did you stop it and then it wouldn't start?
- turns over normally?
- any blown fuses... particularly #15 ?
- any other funny electrical things happening?  Accessorys/lights etc that are also not working?

look for a wire that goes to your injection pump, that is the fuel cutoff solenoid.

Does this have a fusable link in this car.  Did it make a loud clunk noise when it died?  TB?

Are we talking about your 96 or your TDI?

Mine's either died or refused to start a few times, and it's always gone back to normal when I fiddle with the connection at the fuel shutoff solenoid.  My car was kludged by the P.O. when he changed the engine.  He actually used wires out of telephone cable for some of the wiring.  Needless to say it ain't purty.   If you have a jumper just try jumping from battery positive to the shutoff solenoid.

I am with the guys above and if that does't work you can try the fuel filter. I got in a bad batch of fuel that would clog the filter in 20 miles, until the 3rd or 4th filter then it went longer. Same kind of deal as the shut off selinoid, but would lose power for a second then dead instead of just dead. I would try the seliniod first then fuses then look at the filter.

Hope you guys are right about the fuel shutoff, my first thought was a busted timing belt...................

That's where my money is - check that it has 12v when the key is on (run). Trace back from here is not 12v.

it has to be, thats what i said quite a ways up the post... they just dont die and not make any noise. unless theres no fuel. and that can either be because its out of diesel (witch its not) or the stop solinoid either doesnt work or has no power to it.

it was the #15 fuse (engin electronics). i replaced it and she ran like a champ again. how ever itdid blow again. why does the fuse keep blowing? :x

it KEEPS blowing? sounds like a short or some serious resistance somewhere. put a 5 amp bigger fuse in and see if it does the same thing. if it does, start tracing wires and find the problem  :(

I don't know what all that fuse protects.  In the short term, I would run a wire from the battery to a switch in the dash (fuse it close to the battery) and then to the fuel shutoff solenoid.  This will allow you to drive the car without it dying on you.  Then take as much of the factory wiring to the solenoid out of the equation (disconnect as close to the fuse box as possible), it will allow you to see if that wire was blowing the fuse or if it's something else.

i dont know either. as far as i know the car doesnt really have a "computer" in it. but it does cut out the glow plugs  :?

MK3's with the AAZ engine have an "Engine Management Module"... looks like a huge relay in the upper left hand corner of the fuse block... I vaguely remember that it may have a "136" stenciled on it.

It runs the glow plug relay (#110), the fast idle for cold temperatures and air-conditioning, the EGR and turbo cutouts, etc etc etc, as equipped by the particular configuration of the day. ;-)
