lads,anyone ever weighed a fully dressed AAZ with t3 turbo? and a petrol injection engine say a 1.8 gti lump? (gas to you lot 8-) im having front spring trouble, :(

Is it sitting too low? Try springs from an automatic.
Going from 2.0 gas automatic to 1.6td manual in a mk3 with the stock springs for a gas automatic left the car pretty much the same height, if not a little bit higher.

My caravan is sitting quite a bit higher with the 1.6 TD in it.. it came with a chyrsler manual trans and a 2.5L gasser.

fully dressed TDI probably weighs about 50 more lbs than a 1.6TD. if that... my front end doesn't seem to sit any lower with it than my old engine.

thanks for the replys,im running lowering springs -35-40mm and im sitting on the bump stops :( have just fitted 30mm shorter stops and im only just off them,must have bad springs,there eibach too,its like the engine is just too heavy for them or the springs are not right :roll:

i Know a 1.6 with trans attached and full of oil and coolant was damn near border line for me and a buddy to lift :P
Redneck cherry picker.. Some chain and a good solid piece of 4X6 OAK lol HOLY CRAP damned near killed us both! LOL no idea on how much it weighs though.. if i had to guess id say around 5-600lbs.. it felt like i was equally supporting at least 250-275 on my end... lmao

something is wrong.
If you have eibach springs (any drop)
and you are sitting on the bumpstops,
either:
1 - they are not the right springs for that car
or
2- someone hacked the holy hell out of them.
(is the very end of the spring at the big end rusty?)
Eibach gmbh has not been around long enough for them to sag like that.
And they make a darn fine spring!
I am assuming you have stock style shocks, not coilover perches or whatever.
I would love to see a picture!

Brad,there brand new springs,brand new struts from vw, (heavy duty diesel ones) new top mounts,spring plates,nuts,eibach dont understand it,ive got the right kit too,been on the phone to them yesterday,
heres the legs with standard bump stops,the car makes the stops hit the shocker

the bottom 4 coils are touching when the car is lowered to the ground,ive put 30mm shorter poly bush bump stops on and its now sitting on the spring,but if i kneel on the front bumper i can hit the stop easily with a thud as there poly not rubber,seems the car is too heavy for the spring?? i brought eibach as there the best i was told,theres onlt one listing for a mk1 golf 1.1 to 1.8gti including diesel and turbo diesel

eibach state they will fit standard shockers and standard bump stops,my pal has a 20v turbo lump in his with the same springs and he is not on his stops :? thats a heavy lump

My 85' diesel Ford Escort had the battery in the trunk side panel. It was a monster about 2x the size of the normal battery we use.
I would look at changing the front springs to more HD.

I would see if you could send them back and have them test. I work for an industrial supplier and believe it or not sometimes they don't put orders in the box correctly. One time I took a part to a customer 2 times and they were 1-12 thread nuts he wanted 1-8 nuts. The box from our supplier had the wrong nuts. They were marked 1-8 and all we had was 1-12 in there. It could have happend to you.
If I were a betting man I would say someone accidentally put the incorrect spring on that strut. Or put the right spring on, but was for a different kit that was misslabeled.

That looks like the wrong spring.
(though I have not been underneath many mk1's, lots of mk2&3's...)
There are only 5 coils,
and the top half is VERY spread out. (even uncompressed)
It's a nice progressive rate, (typical Eibach)
but methinks that the spring is "too light" for the car
(too low of a spring rate in lbs/in)
Whomever you bought them from, (assuming you bought them new)
should certainly swap them out for you, as there is not a spring sold that should put the car .5" off the bumpstops. That makes the spring (as you are already aware) useless, and the poly bumpstop becomes your new spring.

Hi,i phoned tsr who supplied them,ive emailed them photos,ive phoned eibach,they have never heard of anything like it,they will look at the photos and "probably" send another set out?? just waiting for a call now :wink: will keep you posted 8)

Pehaps you could drum up a installation bill that you could graciously agree to accept a a credit in the future or against your current bill? :wink:

new springs exactly the same,so i removed the bump stops and used the foam ones from a fiat panda with a built in dust cover,there shorter stops and softer,now the car sits on the springs and theres travel when i push on the front end,it drives 100% better,shame eibach state to use standard bump stops :roll:
