Title: AAZ pump on a 1.6TD?
Post by: rallydiesel on March 06, 2009, 11:33:20 am
Is there any advantage to running an AAZ pump on a 1.6TD? Or can you get the same effect by just putting a 1.9 camplate in the 1.6 pump?

1.9 has 2 stage injection.. 1.6 has one stage injection. you would have to swap the injectors in with the pump. theres 2 different break pressures on aaz injectors.

also save the pump top from the 1.6 so that you can play with the fuel screw the aaz pump doesnt have one.

Is there any advantage to using the 1.9 pump for a performance build?

My opinion: in and of itself, not really.. and if it's the (pretty common) version with the "joke" boost pin you could argue you're going backwards, performance-wise.

It's also not quite a bolt-on, since it will come with longer delivery valves and so your hardlines won't fit without some bending.

Me personally: no where near worth the trouble... again, in and of itself.

Thanks, that was the answer I was looking for. Anyone need an AAZ pump?   .

The AAZ pump will function fine with the 1.6 injectors as long as the correct timing spec is used.  There's nothing about the pump itself that requires 2-stage injectors.

i swear i read somewhere that theres 8 bumps on the cam plate of a 1.9 pump. 4 small bumps that ramp up to the bigger bumps?

sorry for my bad technical terms. i failed english.

lol... there is a fuel screw on both pump, what you are taking about is the boost pin adjustment.

Also, change the delivery valve is you want it to fit properly.

What is the condition of your AAZ IP and which one it is?  I just wrecked mine due to tensioning my TB more than it could take

Also Vince, your reference to the "joke" LDA pin. Would you elaborate for my benefit just a little?  My LDA is very sensitive to boost and makes for very little torque below the K14's boost threshold.  Is this what you are referring to?  The nice thing is that it doesn't smoke at all, but it can be trying to get over the "hill" in my torque curve sometimes at WOT.  Fill me in or point me to a good post, if you will.

One other thing about the cam plate.  Mixing single-stage injectors with an AAZ pump or the other way around will work because it's a diesel engine and will almost always work.  It's about being optimized that might break down when you mix and match.  I'm sure the camplate profile is taylored in differently in an AAZ pump to build a fuel pressure wave that best takes advantage of the boot-shaped needle lift behavior of those two-spring injectors.  It cuts down on noise and smokiness a lot.  Fuel consumption should be somewhat better, especially at light loads.  Mixing up this engineered matching will put the harmony off-design.

Advise that early AAZ engines in Europe (maybe Canada, too) used 155bar single-stage injectors.  That pump should match a 1.6TD pretty well.

Lets turn the question backward: What about 1.6TD pump on AAZ?
Is there any advantage to using the 1.6 pump on AAZ for a performance build?
(because 1.9TD pump does not have boost pin adjustments)

Personally, I'd rather use the 1.6td pump on the AAZ along with the 1.6 injectors, hardlines and pump bracket. You could always swap the 1.9 camplate into the 1.6 pump and have all the adjustability of the 1.6 pump along with the fueling of the 1.9 pump.

I did put an aaz pump on my 91 1.6 td using the 1.6 delivery valves injector lines and injectors.  I had originally used the 1.9 injectors but the lines didn't fit well at all since the 1.9 injectors are a bit taller.  Other than that things fit pretty good.  Just remember to use the timing belt pulley that came with the pump.
I noticed a big power increase specifically in the higher rpm range.  I also noticed a more aggressive start up.  It sounded quite mean on start up.  I know the boost pin sucks in these pumps but there was no lack of fuel at any time.  The fuel screw still had the lock collar on it as well.  I say try it.  I think you'll like it.
