Title: Pump seal kit
Post by: Rabbit TD on March 03, 2009, 07:40:12 pm
Does anybody recomend a place here in the States to get a pump seal kit for a 1.6 T/D for a 83 Jetta from?  I heard the shipping is pretty high from Canada.  I definately want the Bosch seals and not that Chinese stuff which was probably originaly designed for plumbing use.  I already put a new main shaft seal in but I probably will get another one for a spare and also the throttle shaft bushing as well.  I already e-mailed a Bosch dealer in Pa. with no response.

Eh I got mine from prothe it's good so far

How long have the seals been in there?  I hope they work out for you but there is no way I'm going to go through tearing a pump apart and put that unknown stuff in it, it's just to big of a job to take a chance on unless there just isn't anything else available.

I paid less for the Bosch kit from ADS in Fresno than I did for the Prothe kit.

Thanks, I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow and probably order them, I wonder how hard it is to change the throttle shaft one?  From what I've read the big thing is marking the relationship between the lever and the shaft before you take it apart.  I originaly thought the advance lever was the bad one but it is definately the throttle shaft.  I'm probably gonna try it with the pump on the engine.  I just finished my Rabbit T/D conversion and ready to drive it and now the damn  throttle shaft seal is leaking

Most likely the throttle shaft is leaking because the bushing is worn. That same company sold the bushing (Bosch) for $25 but you need to know what you have first. Either way, the pump cover has to come off to change the seal (which is just a simple O-ring that can be had at NAPA for pocket change if that's all you intend to replace).

R&Ring the pump cover to replace the throttle shaft seal is far easier than R&Ring the whole pump to change the advance seal.

Chris

Edit: I just checked my notes - the throttle shaft seal is a 6mm x 11mm O-ring. It should be something like 75 cents at NAPA.

And - since I'd rather talk diesels than go to bed, here's some photos for you:

And the underside of the bushing - this requires a press and careful setup to change out

That's a special o-ring. It had to endure a lot of rotational wear. A regular o-ring would not last long.

I'm pretty sure (not 100%) that shipping on a gasket kit to the states would be around $5, even with the bushing. Give Giles a call, 905-940-2266.
