Title: Saab 900 intercooler divider
Post by: idgtd on March 03, 2009, 02:21:43 pm
I'm thinking about buying an aluminum tank Saab 900 intercooler for my rabbit, but I found this post (last one):

http://www.turbododge.com/forums/f4/f17/75751-saab-900-ic-vs-saab-9000-a-2.html

stating that there isn't actually a divider between the inlet and outlet, so hot air will just short circuit the intercooler. Anybody got one that can look at it and verify this?

Alright, that sounds good. I had been looking all day for that info. Thanks for looking for me.

I didn't join the forum to access his pictures, so I'm not sure what those would reveal, but went out and look at one I have on the shelf.  There is a distinct division between the hot and cold sides of the intercooler.  Incorporated into the intercooler is a pressure relief that would open if the core were blocked and allow bypassing of the core, but it certainly wouldn't open under normal circumstances and if it did happen you'd want it to.

I agree. I bought one for my Rabbit Pickup and it is definitely divided. It's one of the best for the price, and compact too.

Overall, the c900 IC isn't that spectacular of an intercooler...all of my saab friends loathe them.

I have a hunch that a dodge neon srt intercooler would fit perfectly in a late westy rabbit, with a little moving of the intercooler.

after reading the last post they are saying that some of the 900's have a division, and some don't, so its better to check for yourselves before buying.

I've got a 9000 intercooler to fit, uses all available space in the front, have to fabricate new brackets for that beast :D

I have had like 10 Saab 900 Turbos, and I've worked on them for 100s and 100s of hours. Those intercoolers are not very good, but they sure aren't that bad! They all have the divider AFAIK. Of course, Saab OE parts like all OE parts, have been designed from a cost point of view, but compared to most other manufacturers, Saab parts are really well thought of.
That's why Saab engines are also some of the very best when you want to build a high-hp gas turbo engine.
