I've had my 1990 mk2 jetta primed for paint for ages now and i need help deciding on paint so I'd love your guys' input!
I'm a little taken on gloss black but the body of the car isn't perfect. You can see what body damage there is here...
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=16482&start=0
But i like the flat primer it is right now (same thread) so i could do a light coat with an HVLP i have just to fill in those hideous roller marks with flat black. (yes i used a roller)
i do loooveee the flat black look... Tremclad is your friend.
Mine is identical to this one minus the white walls. I have flat bbs style rims. minus the flares and minues the plastic body panels.

I didn't vote. You should paint it whatever YOU decide! 8)

I just want some input! (I'm thinking flat) but i wanna know what the masses think!
-
I like shiny

-

i say audi charcoal black because it really dances in the sun. a friend painted his super beetle with this color and it really looked good
-
Mmmmm interesting. It's like a silver.
lildevil's jetta gives inspiration to go gloss...

I like the glossy dark forest green!
-
I really like John Deere Blitz Black: Dries almost instantly, has a really nice satin finish, is fool-proof to apply and is industrial tractor grade!
-
I like the glossy dark forest green!
yeah tremclad. Home depot sells it. < $50/gallon
-
Tremclad ftw.
the back half of my car is spray painted with tremclad.....
-
My whole car is rollered tremclad flat black :D
-
I voted flat-black,
If YOU like flat-black, then do flat-black. I know everyone on HERE thinks it's played out, but that's because they see other people on HERE with it done. I don't have a single car in my area painted flat-black so when I get around to painting, i'm doing flat-black.
BUT, that's also because I think it will look awesome with my Lipstick Red interior! What color is your interior? I personally don't think flat-black would look good with blue, black or gray interior, but that's my preference.
-
blue.
there is a flat grey shame-alier (cavalier) on my street and 1 like ...1950's ford truck flat black with flames in my town (that i know of) that's flat black. I don't know of any other cars in my area with flat black either.
-
tremclad rules. i used the primer to paint my old golf. paint held on real good!!!
-
of the choices you supplied Gun metal is my fav...
however i am partial to the flat look, my projekt Fox will be a shade of dark Flat purple.

SEXZY!!!!!!!! YEAH! can't wait to see pics when you get her painted!
-
With the blue interior I would think about a dark window tint...........
(darker the better)
But seriously, I've always been a fan of the "Darth Vader Drives This Ride" look 8)
-
i plan on gettign the tint! This is should really turn into a thread of people showing off their paint :D :D :D
really loving the input guys. I hope this thread becomes more of a discussion thread.
-
augh i just saw a flat black jetta today driving through town.
Depressing.

X2 on this. I love the look of flat black, especially with the right rims. The other thing is, like "79rabbit4dr", there are no others in my area.
As soon as spring hits around here, ill be hitting up home depot for the tremclad :P
-
yeahhhhh I think i may wanna go forest green just to be different. Someone randomly told me today forest green would look good.
-
well months later and i finally bought gloss black because im tired of people making fun of it being a piece of crap. Glossy paint will straighten that out a bit i think. And if i hide the dated interior with window tint. anyone know of good window tint you can buy online? Ebay obviously. any other factory outlets? anyone know brand names ect.
pics of entire paint job to come.

I know what you mean >:(
-
Yeah. I have guys at work make fun of mine because of some fading/flaking and spraybomb touchup the P.O. did. Funny but they can drive a newer vehicle with holes in the body but they figure mine looks "worse" even though it doesn't have any holes.
-
Calvin, I Hate people like that. Say a 99 cavalier with a hole in the right door. My 84 with three colours of paint and no holes... WEird how mine is the POS!! I hate people! lol
-
no rust, no dents, runs perfectly, incredible mileage, seats 5, carry anything in the trunk, roof rack, 120V on board power... cracked windshield and 18 years old = instant POS by societies standards.

Yup........what's this about 120V??
-
i picked up a power inverter and wired it into the dash in my free time.
Now i can charge my phone with my normal wall charger or charge my lap top. My lap top at full cpu speed/screen brightness draws too many watts but set to "power saver" it is within the wattage allowed by the inverter. I want a 300 watt one for the trunk. I added a second battery to the trunk also.
I got mine from canadian tire. Its supposed to plug into the cigarette lighter but i didn't like that idea so i got some velcro tape and wired it semi-permanently into the dash. it sits on the top of the cubby hole in my mk2 in front of the shifter.
-
Shall I treat you all to a photo of my POS? ;D

Shall I treat you all to a photo of my POS? ;D
Absolutely :)

oh man the painting is so hard! ive done the hood, fuel flap and rear bumper and the over spray on the plastic makes my shoes stick to it so bad it started to rip the plastic apart and out from under the items i was spraying!!! need to find a solution for that ...
this is going to look pretty odd close up. I don't have a fine enough tip ... at all....
-
HMmmmMmm.. Maybe I will stick to rolling mine on and wet sanding :P
I don't usually pick the better looking more time consuming route... lmao I like to keep it short, cheap and simple :)
-
well spraying is supposed to be faster....
like you aren't supposed to sand it much between spraying. if you choose to roll you will spend hours sanding. unless you really dont care what so ever.
i suggest NOT using a flat paint when you roll, use a gloss. unless you want it to be really rough...
my car was murderously difficult to clean and keep clean. the roughness would take your skin off so i sanded it.
-
I dunno Ed. not sure what I plan to do yet :( I want to get the car one colour and quiet so i stop getting police attention.
-
you have been getting police attention??? roll it with trem gloss forest green.
-
I'm thinking of rolling it with a Trem clad semi-gloss more of an army green though.. buttt green doesn't go to well wit ha blue interior does it? hmmm
yes well not for the looks.. but mainly because my car sounds like a goddamn CESSNA going down the road due to a big hole in my downpipe lol
-
Alluminum duck tape ;)
-
first coat on the hood... didn`t go so well... added some laquer thinner on the next application!

some masking and weather stripping removal later....
here she is. this is the 2nd coat sprayed. i sanded the drips down in these photos and is mere moments before the 2nd (and in some places third) coat.
I just finished the last coat with my lady friend who was disturbed by the stench of the paint but was kind enough to help me finish the job :P all my other mates were out or playing baseball... jeeze eh?

in that last picture you can see the back strip below the license plate where i got rear-ended by an explorer... i tried to fix the dents but it was pretty messed up... and i got fed up with the bondo (or more-over i ran out of bondo)
-
Looks good, someday I might go that route ;D
-
lookin Sexi. You not the car :-* lol
Seriously though, nice finish. You rolled primer, then sprayed? What grit did you use between coats? wet or dry sand?
-
wet. 500 or 600.
-
How many coats of spray did you use good sir? lol
-
2 and three in some areas. im gonnna sand it down and do 1 more light one maybe at the end of august
