I just picked up my 1.6 TD MKII donor at the local JY monday, with plans on swapping it into my MKII Jetta.
While I was there, I saw this:
It's an '83, euro-spec. almost 100% intact. only things missing are some interior pieces, like tha gauge cluster, dash fascia, shifter console. And it's also missing the headlights, grille, and one tail light.
The chassis seemed pretty straight, so I asked the guy how much he wanted for it. $150 he said.. (http://media.firevortex.net/icons/custom/green/fv-green-shocked.gif)
"That's it?!?", I ask.
"Ja", he says
"Done"
Anyway here's the deal, since I already have a good donor car for an engine, I changed my plans, and I'm going to dump the TD into the Golf, With the CE2 Wiring. (http://media.firevortex.net/icons/custom/green/fv-green-yes.gif)
There's only a couple things though...
1. It's an automatic
2. I'm on a very tight budget.
3. I Deploy to Iraq this summer.
So here's the list of parts I know I don't have for this project
1. MKI Diesel Timing Belt covers
2. Diesel Passenger side motor mount (is this the same as the MKI gasser?)
3. 5-spd tranny mount
4. 5-spd Steering rack
5. Diesel Fuel level sending unit.
6. Clutch pedal assembly.
7. 5-spd shifter box
What I really need to know is, what other cars can I source these parts from? It's not very common around here to find MKI's in junkyards, and if they are, they are thoroughly stripped.
What parts (if any) can I use from my MKII donor car?
Did I forget anything on my parts list?
I anyone has the parts that I need to make this work, I would GREATLY appreciate it if you let me know ASAP. Like I said, I've only got a few months before I deploy, so I can't take forever searching for these parts.
LONG OVERDUE UPDATE: 24May09
Progress has been slow and steady, still missing a few parts, like the steering rack and associated shift linkage, Grille, Dash Fascia, and some other small things. I've learned alot about MKI's, and IDI's in the past few months, so I seem to have answered most of my own questions.
The CE2 Harness swap is going smoothly, the Chassis harness is for the most part finished, and everything is run when it's supposed to be. It turned out to be much simpler than people say. 90% of the wiring is the same color from Late MKI (CE1) as it is in a CE2 MKII. The most difficult part so far has been wiring up the MKI switches, and I just figured out if I wanna use the CE2 wiper and signal stalks, I need a MKII Ignition housing. :( I'm going to try and fiddle with the MKI housing and see if I can make it work. I may throw up a couple of questions later on, when I get to some of the extra wires I've noticed in the MKI stuff vs. CE2 wiring & vice versa.
Now for the pics
Engine is in (Huge thanks go to QuantumTD for supplying alot of the needed parts):

Much Needed Update" [24 Aug 09]
She runs, she drives, the lights work for the most part. I'm having issues with the grounds in the tail lights for some reason, and I've still got a bunch of little odds and ends to tighten up.

Decided to ditch the MKI Dash in favor of a MKII. It simplified wiring considerably, since I was then able to use the MKII Switches. (duh)

I'm not sure how to deal with the center console, things don't seem to quite line up:
Found some nice chrome stripe door pockets to go with the MKII Dash. :)

Finally got all the wiring in order, looks much better now:

Got the RSL's on, too.

Chopped the stock springs just to see how my car will look with the new suspension. Haven't decided if I'm going with a 80/60 Cup Kit or Coilovers yet.
Got bored and attacked the hood with the buffer, just to see if I could bring the paint back. I would say the answer is "yes" :)

Everything in the engine bay is for the most part complete. Still have to mount the fuel filter, the airbox, and relocate the washer bottle:
Scored this kick-ass old school Momo Wheel.

Still need to source an exhaust , and the car will be mostly complete. (http://media.firevortex.net/icons/custom/green/fv-green-hurra.gif) Haven't decided which one yet. I'm kinda leaning towards a Jetex or Bastuck exhaust, but supersprint isn't out of the question either. We'll see how I look $$$ wise when the time comes.
I wish I could get a TT exhaust, but since I'm going to be registering this car through TUV, I have to worry about TUV compliance. :(

Is the car sitting in Germany ? What would it take for one of your buddies in German to bring a diesel car back here for me ? I understand you don't have to fight with Homeland Security about a car you own on tour and bring back with you..
-
I've got everything you need. Sadly, I'm here in the US.
P.S. Gasser mount is different, sending unit is the same, as is the gas tank.

Being in the US is not an issue, since I'm in the military, I have the APO. You can send anything to me the same as you would send it to anyone else.
The only catch is that it has to be USPS (go figure)
I hope this helps.
PS. I start tearing down this weekend, and I will post update pics soon. :)

Just being cheesy and saying thanks to everyone in military doing good around the world. My sister in law is in Iraq now and we are taking care of her 7 month old daughter for the year shes gone.
Thanks again.

That's the dash that all Later MKI Golfs came with over here, I believe you know it in the US as a "Cabby Dash" or a dash out of a Cabriolet
All later MKI's in the US got the "Westy dash" right?

Would you like to sell the steering wheel with no horn button pictured?
PM me please.

OK, I scored a late GTD gauge cluster at the JY yesterday, hooked it up....nothing. :(
How would I go about testing the connection at the cluster plug, or testing the tachometer itself?
