Title: How likely is it that i broke an engine mount?
Post by: Smokey Eddy on February 03, 2009, 11:01:52 pm
She's makin 20 psi of boost before the hoses blow off (i have to fix that). It can lay down some SERIOUS rubber....

The mounts are (from what i can tell?) stock... The AAZ head is a little heavier than the 1.6td one...

I can move the engine maybe 1/8th of an inch by leaning on it. Is it time for solid engine mounts?

The 400CI nova i built in school had solid mounts. AND you knew about it  :D

Yes, no? anyone else have solid mounts?

theres the poly insert kit available that fills the voids in the OEM rubber mounts.... this will eliminate a bit of movement and prevent the oem mounts from being overstressed.

put the foot brake on and slowly let the clutch out a little bit and watch the engine to see if it is moving excessively... 8)

You don't want solid mounts Ed.

Holly crap it vibrates the entire car!!

Ever got for a ride in a car that had an exhaust drone so bad it gave you a headache? That's nothing in comparison to a mk2 with solid mounts.

I had switched to a G60 rubber front mount then I rode in 53 willys car (full hydro) and DAYUM it was nice. Well he has hydro rears and a G60 style front. Anyway, I ran home and swapped in my hydro front again and talk about heaven!

Now keep in mind I just parked my car in-Lu of an 02 Passat with auto trans and heated seats...

Point is the solid mounts are only going to be nice about once a week, the rest of the time you will like the softer mounts.

Yeah, don't go solid. With that kind of vibration you will be replacing light bulbs too often. Its also a good way to start cracking the spot welds that hold your unibody together.  I had an IDI Jetta in 85' that someone thought the solid mounts would be great on. The passenger side front corner of the body where the right control arm bolts had all of its lower welds broke from this shaking. It was not fun to fix.

I didn't think i'd get such serious replies! I was kidding about solid mounts!!!

I was mostly wondering how much movement was too much.

How do i look at the engine and play the pedals at the same time? :P Do i have to take the hood off again?  :(

just open the hood...you can see the engine from the drivers seat just fine...
or get a friend to help...

i'm with you on this one.. i have the passat solid mount in front and will never go back.  that thing will last for LIFE!  no more f***ing around with crap mounts that go after a few years   (well okay, the front mount can last over 15 years but replacements aren't made of the same quality unless you spend $$$)

i don't really mind the vibration.  it's actually a bit calming!  a person with parkinsons would feel at home in my car

hopefully not too OT...  I discovered while my Jetta was up on jacks that I can move the engine in it's mounts by hand - not just a flex, but sort of a tip / clunk.  Am I correct in assuming that it's time for new mounts?

i can definitely tell when im having diesel withdrawls. when i drive my vw, my hands dont shake. usually my hands always slightly shake. dont know why, its never gotten bad enough to talk to the dr. about. but if i drive my rabbit fairly regularly.. the shaking pretty much goes away. i hope i dont have parkinsons...

Thanks.  Guess I'll be adding this to my to do list.  Fortunately the parts aren't too pricey.  Hopefully a relatively simple job.  Any warnings?
