Title: what are the gains - GTD??
Post by: rixy on February 01, 2009, 10:45:04 am
hi peeps, i was wondering exactly :-

what would blocking the wastegate shut do?? as opposed to blocking the BOV on a 1.6 GTD??

just wondered, as i have been told to block one by one person, and the other by another person. Just wondered what each does exactly, and which route is prefered??

Best bet's to say screw you to the BOV and set your waste gate where you want it.

Or, be a fool like me and "Attempt" to control your boost via fueling limitations.

But we all know what happens then.

The BOV is a redundant safety feature that relieves boost pressure if it exceeds 15 psi or so.  It never operates during normal function and was eliminated with the ECO 1.6TD and 1.9TD motors.

The wastegate on the other hand, regulates the boost pressure by allowing exhaust gases to bypass the turbine when boost pressure reaches the max desired boost.  Closing the wastegate will allow boost pressure te reach whatever maximum is possible based on fueling and rpms.

Blocking the BOV on an otherwise stock motor will do nothing.  If, on the other hand, the wastegate has been adjusted/blocked, then the BOV will open and dump boost pressure any time it exceeds the BOVs opening pressure.  Under those circumstances, blocking the BOV would prevent the dumping of boost and allow it to increase.

About how much can the blow off valve be adjusted to or modified to boostwise and still operate?

Think about it this way. They eliminated it on later models, as in - made it obsolete, not needed.

so.....basically......mine is standard engine, wastegate as per vw. BOV is blocked, boost pin is re ground, and gov mod completed.

If i remove feed to wastegate, will the boost stay the same, as im not adding more fuel?

Or.......should i remove feed to wastegate, and unblock BOV?

how do these boost adjuster thingys work?
