Hey everyone,
I'm looking for an HID kit for my car... As far as my research has taken me, I'll need an H4 kit bi-xenon 4300k... Looking for the best possible visibility as i drive alot at night. I'm also wanting to be able to use high beams and low beams...
My car has dual rounds...
Any help, links whatever would be awesome, I remember hearing from one guy on the Vortex about a 165 dollar kit, but I lost the link
Cheers,
Joe

I just bought a set for my mk2 this summer, then bought a set as well for my girlfriend's mk4. Best purchase I have ever made for the car.
When upgrading to an HID lighting system you also have to replace your headlights. They MUST be E-Code (European Code) otherwise they will have a spread beam pattern and blind people driving by. These can be purchased relatively inexpensively on Ebay for $160ish. Just look for E-Code.
More info on converting here: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html
The bulb type you are looking for is not H4. It is actually H4-3. The "-3" basically means with a high beam. As for type, I have 6000k. IMO it isn't worth getting the them if they are any lower than the 6000k bulb.
The high beam functions by using a solenoid to change the angle of the bulb therefor throwing the beam pattern into a higher position.
The place where I bought mine is in China. Here is their website. http://www.vvme.com I really have no idea what the tattoo kit picture on the front page is about. Nowhere on the site is there any other reference to it...
It comes with EVERYTHING you need to install including the ballast and even a relay system. Both sets that I have purchased have worked well to date and are relatively inexpensive as well.
If you have any other questions just ask.
EDIT: I just see now that you have dual rounds... If I recall, the inners do not serve as a high beam. So you would need an H4-3 kit for the outers and an H4 kit for the inners. As well as E-Code standard headlights for both inners and outers. I think it might look funny having HID's on one and not the other.
I have Aeros so mine was fairly easy to do.

I buy all mine from VVME.
I've purchased 9 kits from them over the last 2 years.
just installed a new set in my Passat last weekend.
I have a set of 6000k H4 Bi xenon bulbs and the relay kit for them as well but no Ballasts.
If you wanted to save some cash go to VVME and buy a couple ballasts then I'll sell you my bulbs and relay harness for cheap!
It's best to e mail them with what you need and ask them for a price. I just bought a single beam H7 kit and 2 single H7 bulbs and it was $124.00 on their site but they e mailed me back a price of $88.00 shipped. Arrived on my door 4-5 days later!!!!
Great service!

i just looked and you can get the replacement ballasts for $7.00 Ea!!
I'll ship you my bulbs and harness for $35.00. You will have a complete set of H4 hi/low HID's for under $80.00.

I just ordered an H4-3 Bi-xenon kit, comes with bulbs ballasts everything as far as they said and it cost 98USD so...200CND :P
45 Days Dan, what the hell, the guy told me 4 to 5...i hope thats what you meant... :D

$124.00 shipped for an H7 kit.
They also want $176.00 for the Bi xenon kit. and VVME want's $79.00.
I just bought my H7 kit from VVME and also bought 2 extra bulbs. $88.00 shipped for all of it.
I think I'll tough it out and pay for my shipping.

Same here, I bought the kit for 100 shipping in....dont mind waiting 45 days... the lack of daylight winter should be over by then
Hope I won't need extra bulbs, are they a tricky install? I have the H4 pigtails right now I think... Dual Round grille
-
another question...
Will H4-3s fit ok in my chrystal rounds? Sounds like a silly question when i'm typing it, just wondering if there are any considerations...
Joe-

They should fit just fine :)
45 days was a typo on my part, it was supposed to say 4 - 5 days..
I ordered mine Last Tuesday the 20th, they showed up in Utah on Friday afternoon the 23rd!

As long as you have H4 type headlamps then they will fit. However, the mechanism behind the bulb is a good 3 inches long. I had a slight clearance issue on the mk4 I installed them on.
Again though, I stress the importance in getting E-Code type headlamps when switching to HID's. If you are blinding people I can assure you that you will get pulled over pretty quick.
If you don't read anything else about the using improper headlamps with HID's watch this:

E-code =/ projector.
HID bulbs go in HID projectors.
Relayed halogen H1 and H4 bulbs go in e-code reflectors.

All fine and good, I of course do not want to blind people, I want more visibility than my crappy halogens provide. Does anyone know if vvme.com provide e-code lamps?
Also I was nervous about clearance, 3 inches long. I'm quite sure I dont have H4 headlamps, I had to have pigtails put in to convert them to H4... I have the dual rounds setup from HK....

I guess I should have read more before just going out an ordering...

Oh well, my exhaust boarders legality as does alot of "upgrades" on my car....whats another?

VVME does not carry headlights. Ebay is a great place to start looking!
-
E-code lamps have the little dome thing inside...yeah I have those... Im just wondering about clearance with that little dome thing...
-
They have the shield inside as well as a better cutoff pattern. Very very important. But as long as the glass lens says ECode and not DOT it will work.
The clearance issure I'm talking about is coming off the back of the bulb. The mechanism for the high beam. Inside shouldn't be an issue. It depends what you have behind the headlight.
On my mk2 the airbox was a little close. The black part on the H4-3 bulb in the picture below is what I'm talking about. You need a good 3 inches of clearance to be able to get the bulb into the housing. Probably not an issue, just letting you know.

Man I dont think Mine are 3". Maybe 4" over all length but I'm thinking they are closer to 1.5 from the bulb face (where it mounts) to the back of the actual base.
I dont know for sure though, my car is 60 miles from me so I cant even go look.

The mechanism isn't three inches however you need a good 3 inches to be able to slip the bulb into the housing.

now that may be true for sure...
I'm reinstalling reg H4's in mine this week end if I remember I'll snap a couple pics for reference.

Your exhaust doesn't quite have the same potential to blind and kill.
Speaking as someone who drives at night for a living, HIDs in halogen reflectors = really bad news.

My opinion is, and without opening up a discussion to this, I have driven by ricers and other cars with drop in HID kits, and although it's bright it doesnt blind. I would be interested to see any death caused by being blinded by HID light...I bet there are many more incidents of death related to drivers not seeing things due to crappy halogen light, Relatively new technology yes I know, only time will tell I guess.
Besdes, you arent supposed to look into oncoming headlights, keep your eyes on the road...
Moving on,
The lights are an INSANE difference, I saw stuff on my drive home that i've never seen
They are well aimed and I wasnt flashed once, I even forgot to lower my high beams a couple times (bad habit from my crappy halogens where I drove around with high beams on all the time, as the low beams were like candle light) and wasn't flashed once... I'll give it a week to see, but I strongly recommend this to anyone...
:D
-
Proud to report that this upgrade is without a doubt worth it...
I have several hundred KMs on the lights now (night driving) and I have passed, followed and crossed cops (both municipal and provincial) and have not been pulled over. Yesterday on my drive back I was following a sunfire doing about 110 and came up on a cop parked with lights off trolling for speeders, we both saw his reflectors from what seemed like half a km away.
My field of view at night is wide and 3-4 times more far reaching than before, and road signs pop out...
I have not been flashed once, aside from forgetting my high beams.
A+

Sooo...... an HID kit from vvme and some projector lenses? but not E-code?

I think right there he says he's got 'em ;)

yeah but the article says Hid bulbs in Halogen lamps = no no doesnt it?
or are E-codes HID lamps?

Breezing through this thread,I see more pro's than cons. I have NEVER enjoyed the lighting coming from my Mk2 aero headlights. Granted, they are probably original, and I added halogens. But nothing really noticable.
What do you guys recommend as the best bang for the buck?
Or keep the halogen bulbs and buy new lenses?
Thanks.
Stay safe,stay well. Jimmy.

Relays and good lamps. They were cheaper than legit HID projector retrofits, and improved the light output from my Quantum's lights. Even just relaying them instantly brightens your output leaps ahead of stock.

Relays with big, dedicated wires powering the lights, use your original wiring to control the relays.
E-code light assemblies are a must whatever you do. The US market Vanagon has the worst lights I've ever seen on a modern vehicle...I replaced them with Euro rounds (H4s and city marker bulbs) with relayed power, and they are absolutely brilliant, with a nice sharp cutoff, important in a light that is 4 feet off the ground. ;)

HID's have to be put in Ecodes(European) or Projectors. Not DOT (North American) headlights.
The reason for this has to do with the way the light project their light. Ecodes have a shield that prevents the light from going directly forward. Instead, the only light coming from the headlamp is the light that is being reflected off of the reflective coating inside. DOT headlights do not have this shield.
-
I'll have to snap some shots of the relay job I did on the Quantum, I'm rather proud of it. Dedicated power, dedicated ground, and short wiring runs for each.
I'm stuck with stock sealed beams until I can free up some more cash (Come on, semester start! Bring my money back in!), but the relays are mounted beside the headlight pair each feeds, so I didn't have to loop away or cut up the stock wiring. I bent up some little sheet metal shields to keep water and dirt from getting in them, and they're not stuffed up somewhere where there is no air circulation to keep them cool so they should last a long time.
