Title: IP rebuilder?
Post by: patracy on January 27, 2009, 03:53:52 am
Anyone know where I could send my pump and have the idle speed and max fuel screw reset on?  I've tried to get it right since I replaced a seal, but it still idles rough.

Also the cost of having it put on a bench to reset it.

If it idles rough then turn the screw in.

Been trying to adjust it.  Can't get it right after a week.  The throttle hangs if I get the idle right.

what mods have you done to the IP?

from what you say (and that's not much) you need to index the throttle shaft, then adjust the residual and idle screws again.

EDIT, yap, have you taken pictures from the shaft before you took the throttle assembly off the pump?   guess how I know how important that is  8)

No mods to the pump.  Only replaced the seal that surrounds the shaft from the boost pin.

Throttle shaft is where it started.  I just can't get the thing to idle or run right.  I get the idle smooth again (yet high), then it revs too high and sticks.  I turn the max screw down, rough idle and no power.  Not able to build boost like I could and driving it required WOT almost all the time.  EGT's are low as well.  I can post a vid tomorrow of it if you'd like.  Here's how it ran before I replaced the seal though.

I'm looking at the pump from emiata, has anyone had any experience with him?  I got my timing tools from him off ebay.

Ok after reading more about his pumps, I think I'll stay away.  Does anyone have a guide on how to dial in a pump from the ground up?

I guess I have the following questions

How do you ensure the throttle is indexed correctly?  I have it back like it was (unless there's something weird going on inside the pump)

How do you set the base idle?  Idle screw first with max fuel screw all the way out and add more max in until the throttle sticks?  It seems like that plays with the base idle though each time.

I'm seriously to the point where I just want to install another pump.  It's sad since this pump was just rebuilt (well it was sold as rebuilt to me, even though it had a leak!).

I would find out who REBUILT it. It might have been ematia, I got one of his and it ran worse after the rebuild and was missing a few peices. I would use the max fuel screw to adjust your power/smoke. When you have it barely smoking under load then go back and set the idle. That is what I did and I am not a pump guru....If in complete doubt go to the vendors section see a man named GILES and get out your check book. :D

Haven't a clue who rebuilt it.  I bought it from an individual whom had it laying around (with the TD top end I bought) from craigslist.  It was marked with tamper paint and safety wire when I got it.  And it ran fine (save for the pesky LDA leak) when I first installed it.  I just screwed it up.

When I try to play with the max screw, I end up with hanging throttle.  I can get it dialed in to puff a little smoke on revs but the idle is rough.  Then when I try to ramp the idle speed up, it sticks as well there.

I emailed Giles a short while ago.  Hopefully I'll hear something from him soon.  I'd love to have a "super pump".  But I fear the effects it'd have on a NA bottom end.  Hopefully he might be kind enough to dial it back into spec on the bench for me.

Did you take it off the car? Cause it sounds like the timing may be retarded as well.

That would definately be here I would be looking first too beore I did anthing to the pump itself and if you don't have the dial indicator get yourself one because without it even one of those Giles pumps won't do much for you like it should.

Loosen the mouting bolts/nut and turn the pump while the engine is running.
 Don't loosen them too much.

^^^^ my method for timing :D

EarMaster2000

my frankenpump idles perfectly without the lever touching the idle screw, it must seat internally against something..
if I try to index the throttle by one position I have to unscrew the max fuel for it to idle, it makes no power and revs will hold on its own.

Before you put in on the road, you're going to cover your timing belt ?

Does it have the lever on the back of the pump that goes from top to cold start?

Andrew

I'm not exactly sure what that is, but the cold lever on my pump just has a provision for a cable hookup.

I see that the pumps on emiata have some sort of linkage to the cold start.

This weekend I'm going to give it a try on timing the engine again.  Otherwise I'm going to just take it to a shop at this point.

Yes.  That video was only when I first started it.  Before all the pump issues.  I need the cover anyhow for my tach pickup/sender I'll be installing.
