So the actually locking mech will work. But when I just close it without locking it wont stay closed. I can push it open. After the car warms up it seems to work fine.
I tried greasing the latch and stuff but it doesnt seem to help... Any clue as to why the door will close without staying shut unless I lock my doors?

its a 96 jetta

The grease in it is too cold and gelling. Mine does this as well when cold. Take it apart and regrease it with fresh grease or do what I do and just give the door an extra push when you close it.
Kind of like following through with the push so the latch mechanism has time to shut.

In these temps it could be moisture freezing as well. Get some WD-40 in there for a quick fix.

could use pure anti-freeze
