Title: short throw shifter
Post by: gunrtd on January 18, 2009, 03:41:53 pm
I searched around trying to find a cheap short shifter for my 95 jetta.
Came across one from a major brand name that has a "b" & a "m" in their name.
Price was silly high. Ordered it and found there to be no shifter, but two brackets in it's place. These brackets replace the relay levers and the selector shaft is attached to them. They are longer in overall length but are practically the same as the factory units in every other way.
I measured the two brackets and returned them. spent about ten minutes with my mig and I had lengthened the factory brackets to match the "performance" ones.
The bracket on the trans measures 5", the other one (shifter end) is 7". I cut the brackets added in the amount to make up the overall length and ran a a stiffener down one side for support.
Short shifts for cheap!

I made one for the mk2 and it was stupid easy.  They must make a ton of money on those things!  Good work.

On some mk2's that rod has holes in the ends for codder pins instead of those plastic snaps.

gunrtd,

How about posting up some measurements of your linkage? Maybe a pic if you have one? You could just draw it out as well and post of the drawing.

Just thinking of a DIY short throw thread for future reference.
