Anyone know where i can get hold of any pre-built FMIC boost pipes for my Golf GTD?
id prefer not to have to make them myself seeing as im rubbish at that sort of thing,

I've always wondered about PVC but actualy how hot the boost air coming out of the turbo gets at lets say around 15 psi is something I don't know because this going to be my first turbo experience. I know that little factory rubber 90 degree rubber elbow connecting my turbo to the intake don't look like anything super special though and it's an 83 model which looks fine to me and this motor had over 400,000 miles on it before I rebuilt it. I know the thing probably never made more than probably 10 lbs. boost from whatI've been reading here but if a person is going to stay at 15 or less maby PVC and the rubber flex joints with hose clamps that you get in the plumbing section at a hardware store might hold up and would be real easy and real cheap to rig up, paint it any color you want and who knows the difference. I know that there is a lot of overkill about some of these kinds of things and I've done it myself before. Like I said though I don't actually know what these temps are but at reasonable boost levels it probably would work, at least on the return side if not the whole way through I would guess Let's see what some of the people say that might have already tried it, I'm sure they have, schedule 80 ok :?: I'm serious, what do some of you all think about it, I might try it later down the road myself. :wink:

Yeah they are cheap, I didn't know you could get one for anywhere near that, I saw one there or $140 with the intercooler included. I'm sure that's the route I'll go when the time comes, thank's for pointing it out :D
I'd still like to know if PVC would hold up though just out of curiosity even though I probably won't use it now with those ebay prices that low.

no PVC will melt! a guy here on the forum had showed pics. of the melted pieces he had used for less then 500 miles! he cought it in time only because he smelled the plastic burning when he shut the motor down! compressed air gets hot! add a EGT gage after the cold side exit of the turbo and see what i mean! now you know! and you have been warned! only you could imagine what plastic will do going in the motor!

Well that's what I was looking for, I figured somebody tried it somewhere, that sure would make a hell of a mess wouldn't it :( what made me wonder though is the little rubber elbow on the 1.6 T/D from th turbo to the manifold that really doesn't look like it's anything special but it isn't PVC though. Thanks for the information though, that's how we learn from our own screw-up or hopefull somebody elses :D

I think I would though be a little leary about the aftermarket ones with the plastic end caps on them.

I have a ebay intercooler and it's BEEFY...I would not worry with 50psi+ pumped through it...
BTW the ebay coolers are fully welded aluminum construction..no plastic...I looked at junkyard intercoolers and when you compare the price of ebay with a crappy weird size Saab or Volvo or other intercooler you will see the Ebay intercooler cant be beat...
from what I have seen I would rather have a ebay cooler over a STOCK GTD VW intercooler...

the only thing that pvc is good for is mocking up your piping system. then you can get it fabbed up. but why bother when you can get those universal piping kits off ebay??? but if you must, you might as well go ABS, as i think it will be able to withstand the heat much better. (the ABS needs some modification though... the PVC melts at 80 deg C, and normal ABS can withstand 60 deg C)
on a plus side, at east most of the bits (if any) will get lodged in the intercooler, as the air going into the intercooler is much hotter than the air exiting, unless its heat soaked.

automotive plastics is different from other plastic ! engineered different for it's application because of the heat that generated by the engine! have you ever seen a factory car come with a hardware store bought PVC hose on it when it's been around for years for the engineers to know about if needed?
i'm sure you can answer that? just because PVC is cheap and you might have some laying around the house! it's not the correct stuff to use!
a cheapy from flea bay will give better performance then the house hold plumbing pipe! and looks better!

I haven't looked real hard yet if there is a 81 T/D rabbit setup available but I wonder how similar they are to a Golf if I'd have to go that way, much trouble to modify it :?:

If you can get hold of some spare pipes from a motor similar to your or can take your off, take it to any place that does custom exhausts and get them to copy it. I did mine with custom chrome in Nuneaton and got it done for around £80 in stainless steel.

Use 2"radiator hose for the couplers.You can get steel conduit from home depot cheap,but it would rust on the outside maybe.

I was thinking, what about radiator hose. I'm gonna try and fit an intercooler at some point so I will have to do some research.

Rad hose is normally too small - I got a few IC hoses from a couple of peugeot 306s/406s - really long.
Cut up to make bend sections and then used alloy pipe between

That's a real nice instalation there, looks like a perfect fit. Exactly what kind of car and intercooler is it? I'd like to find one to fit my 81 Rabbit as good as your's does, very nice job :wink:
