hey there guys, I am rebuilding my head after a catastrophic timing slip, and I am having some trouble getting the old valve stem seal out to replace them.
are there any tricks?

strong language + needle nose gets the same result, usually.

thats what I was trying, I guess I need to spend more time and break out my sailor language.

It's mechanic language now. You have to start making up your own. There are several i've constructed with my good 4 wheeling friend stuart. Don't know if they would be appropriate for the forum however. But it would be funny to see if some people have the same. heh heh.
They are held on with a bit of a lip. I guess ideally you would want some sort of ... backwards press that would slowly pull up with untold force without the effect of you flying backwards throwing the pliers into the windshield of the car beside you in the garage.

once when the tool broke i managed to use a small right angle pry bar. Just be ccaarrreeefffuuuullllllll.

I just took an old pair of pliers and ground out a slot in the first third of the jaws to form a lip.
A more eloquent approach is to weld a nut on the end of the pliers first... as per about 1/2 way down this thread:
