I'm looking for a common (ie: cheap junkyard type) turbo I can run on a 1.9 TDI. I want something that will spool quite late. Anybody have any tips? I think the merc 300d turbos may spool a little too early but they are a dime a dozen. What Holset turbos would be good, hy35?
Thanks for any insight.

why do you want something to spool late? the TDI torque is at around 1500 rpm or so.
i'm currently running the K24 on my mTDI and i think its a bit too big... the TDI doesn't rev like the 1.6 so you lose a bit of the top end, which the turbo works beautifully at. i wouldn't dare go anything bigger on mine unless i had a lot of custom work done to make it work. the TDI's don't seem to rev more than 4500-ish, while i could get my 1.6 up to about 5500 easily. and it didn't sound quite as harsh as the TDI going at around 4k rpm. (sounds real mean... lots of advance )
the torque of the motor is extremely impressive. i'm glad i chose to go 1.9TDI instead of rebuilding my 1.6TD
i would say go either K14, or if you must, K24. what exactly are your plans?

Well, I have a k14 coming. My plan is the mythical compound set-up with the k14 as the small turbo. Hmmm, maybe the merc 300d wouldn't be so bad then?
