Post by: boosted_diesel_84 on January 10, 2009, 03:47:44 pm
So i been doing a lot of researching and looking thru old posts about adding a vw cluster with a tach to run off W terminal,. i am still confused as to what i actually need to do, i have an 84 jetta TD and a cluster from an 86 cabriolet, how do i make this work, and how do i swap the glow plug light into the cluster,

yes i have searched and just found a bunch of ramblings, i need to find like a nice step by step, with pics. anyone help? thanks in advance!!

just ploping in a gasser tach on the diesel W terminal wont work out very well.... the gasser tach needs modifications to read the w terimnal signal properly.

Read this. It is about a vanagon I believe, but Vince and some others go on about how to do this mod. I'm sure this will get you close. If not I would PM Vince and see if he could do something for you.

There is another alternative and I have been thinking about it myself.  There is a guy at 4crawler.Com/Diesel/CheapTricks/index.shtml who has made a regular gas tach. work on a diesel using a photocell in the timing belt cover with the breaker mounted on the injector pump pulley.  He has a kit for $40 to do this and other options including a tach as well.  I don't know if he still sells them or not for that price or even at all though but his site is still there, again I don't know how to do the link post thing.  It really doesn't look to complicated and you can use about any tach you want.  I'm gonna look into it myself after I get this motor in, Spring if not sooner :D

I did the circuit on 4crawlers web page.  Purchased the parts from digikey.  Enough to do a few of them since a couple of friends wanted to try them too.  With the 4 crawler circuit it mimics a gas tach signal so I can use regular gasser shift lights and accesories.  To me that was easier than reworking the tach.  I rework surface mount soldered boards at work so the through hole soldering and circuit was easy for me also.

I was going to post the link, but it's the same one you have, and it worked for me.   :?

clean out cookies on computer?  or maybe a hic-up when you tried it earlier?

I've got a digital tachometer (from a Vauxhall Astra GTE) connected to the W terminal of my diesel (Vauxhall) Nova,
using a converter made by Dom, which can be bought on http://www.picbits.co.uk/catalog/index.php
Easy to set up (up, down and set button) and cheap enough (for the lazy ones like me).

I assume y'all read the end of the FAQ Gas tach conversion where jimbote describes how to add a Ford probe to the crank along with part #.  No rewiring required.  Cheaper than the optical sensor that Roger Brown uses.

Andrew

Hi Andrew. I read that too, but at first I could not see where is shows how to wire the Ford Hall Sensor...  Then I read the entire thread and saw it is so simple it did not need a diagram :-)  I searched the web and found one reference to the cost being less than $10 for this part !

if I would have known about the Ford part over a year ago when I did mine, I would have gone that route.

That looks perfect! Converter is a little expensive. Anyone else done this?

I just read about the [jimbote] gas to diesel tach conversion and that looks by far the cheapest and least complicated method yet. Just one question, it will work with most aftermarket tachs won't it :?: This really looks like the way to go so I might as well weld those 2 nuts on the pulley now while the engine is out and look for a low rpm tach.  I guess the in- dash tachs for the Rabbits are petty high arent they, and then you're not sure they work till you get them.  I just hope it will work with a small VDO, Sunpro or something in that range for he T/D Rabbit.

Video of standard set up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWpxcM_9uwU)

Gasser unit modified as per the FAQ on here.
£20 and a gasser revcounter gets you the same.[/url]
