Does anyone know when VW came out with the oil control baffle that sets on the head under the valve cover? I have one now on a 81 N/A but that head came off an 84 Rabbit but it might have been added on later with that engine too, I don't know. I'm building a 1600 T/D from a 83 Jetta and this engine did not have one when I got it or maby someone didn't put it back on somewhile back. I'm just wondering if I need one on this engine which is re-bored and all so there shouldn't be any blowby {hopefuly} to speak of but I am also wondering if these things might also create a venting problem, I don't know when or even if they were ever installed on T/D engines. Just wondering if or not to put the one from my N/A engine on the T/D one or not when the Spring Transplant happens :D

I would put one in there. You've got nothing to lose. :)

There's definitely one on my TD... They won't cause any problems, but could potentially save you from a nasty runaway at some point - absolutely no reason NOT to put it on.

Ha-Ha Believe me I know about the runnaway thing when I first started messing with these little engines. My first 1.5 N/A 80 Rabbit took off one day on the interstate by itself, scared the *** out of me especially when I turned off the key and it didn't make any difference, I looked back and I figured the whole engine must be on fire from the smoke  . That car only had about 75000 original miles on it and wasn't in bad shape at all but I re-ringed and rebuilt the head anyway and it was okay fter that. It seemed like nobody knew about the baffle fix back then, but that was the early 90's though.

Should Vanagons have the baffle too, or are they different enough in the way they are mounted to not need one? I have a fresh engine in mine.

My '84 TD Jetta does not have one of these... Where can I purchase one?

Those were installed the same year VW went to hydralic lifters.

As to the original question re: when first appeared in these engines: I first began to see them on '84 models and there should not be any problems with venting. Adding oil when changing oil goes a little slower....that's about it.
