Title: Mk3 IDI From United Kingdom
Post by: Jamie on January 05, 2009, 09:28:52 am
Hi I'm Jamie from the U.K, though I'd post my Golf Mk3 up here as it has the famous AAZ IDI engine!

I bought the car 2 years ago as I needed something very cheap to get to work in and somehow I've still got it! :D It's been very reliable so far, although the pot-holed roads around here are causing some suspension problems

The car is a 'K' 1992 model and has now done about 175,000 miles! I've seen a couple of 'J' 1991 models around but they're very rusty and most have now  been scrapped. There seem to be many more Tdi models around than TD here in the UK.

These pics hide most of the dents/scrapes

This sign marks where the Trans-Atlantic Internet/phone cable heads out to sea towards the USA :D

Most of them have been raped of their engine for me to put into T3's!
You wouldn't believe how many manifolds, mountings and various AAZ gubbins I just chuck in the bin!
Only nice MKIII I can remember driving was a VR6 we used to look after at the VW specialist I worked at for a few years, it sported a set of billes, some eiback springs and anti roll bars and it was finally a MKIII that went around corners!!
You done those axle bushes yet? I used to hate doing them, horrible job!
Stick some powerflex ones, much easier and more betterer (technical term)
Then go find an intercooler set up from a MKIII TDI, more or less bolt on I reckon.

Awesome. Good pictures too.

A Mk3 2 door AAZ TD IDI is my dream car, I <3 80% WVO 20% RUG  8) it makes the humble car so worth it. Too bad the mk3 idi isn't in the states

Cheers, I didn't realise that you've not got the IDI in the states! Apparently there are lots  available in Canada,  but I don't know if you guys can import them...

Ah yes I've heard the AAZ-> T3 is a popular conversion! I bet the extra power/torque is useful when hauling a van full of camping gear etc around.

You're right about the poor handling of the Mk3, it's really like cornering in a wobbly jelly . God knows why they've left the front and rear anti-roll bars off my car completely, it certainly doesn't help. The roll bar kits seem quite expensive for something which should have been standard equipment!

The axle bushes were done in 2005, luckily before i owned the car, sounds like a nightmare to remove them.

An intercooler looks fairly straightforward, so i'll research that!

nice motor Jamie, she looks well looked after.
check this thread regarding intercoolers:
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=5716&highlight=intercooler

hopefully it will give you a few pointers.
i am also adding pics of my intercooler added to my mk3 aaz engine.

inlet manifold turned around facing the other way and egr valve blank:

intercooler pipes in engine bay 2" all round:

pic of my motor running bumper ducts:

aluminium tubing (from diy store) to air filter:

hope that gives you some ideas.
i also have added the intercooler from a mk3 tdi and used its original bracket to mount it - bracket and bolts from VW, intercooler from scrappy/ebay.
A Sharan/Galaxy one (see photo)

will fit into the front bumper if you remove the slats!
I have one but dont have the time to fit it - currently renovating the house - have been since September 2007...

My boost is turned upto 1.0 Bar by Derv Doctor in Derby which I believe is the Governer Mod. Search the forum and you will find lots of info.

Brilliant nogama3  thanks, that'll give me some ideas to work with! Atleast  I don't have an egr to blank off, makes it a bit easier. I already have a boost pin so the intercooler is next!

I see you've used 2'' tubing , nogama3. Is this the same diameter as the turbo outlet / manifold inlet?

I've got an intercooler with 2.5'' outlets and am not sure if to use 2.5'' 2.25'' or 2'' pipe to connect this to the turbo. Any recommendations?

you'll see no real benefit having anything bigger than about 2" tubing.. generally speaking, intercooler charge piping is oversized because people can do it and brag about it, not because you need to.

my mk3 intercooler setup is here:

http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=135264#135264

i've seen a 10% improvement in milage since installing and much better torque across  the whole boosted rev-range (running a k14 (standard turbo) at 18-19psi at the moment

Thanks gldgti , your setup looks great! I'll probably go with the 2'' piping with 2.5'' -2'' reducers on the intercooler outlets.  :D

yeah its not too hard to do.

for more steps on how to complete a FMIC setup on a mk3 like mine, look at this thread (you may have to join, i dont know). i put a little more info in this thread:

Mines a similar story and probably nearby!

£200 from portreath - now lives in North Devon.

It's ugly, loathsome, 100% reliable slug of a car.

Bought as a donor, drive it until my mk1 is ready then drop the lump in - with new pump, turbo, FMIC and hopefully and extra 100 ponies

Big Oil got their hooks in our EPA policy during Bush 1 (1993) They could not allow us to drive 50 mpg cars here without making it harder for the auto maker... and again when his son (also big oil man) GW Bush had 8 years to really whack us with harsh diesel emission requirements on small vehicles. If you have a dump truck, you can keep spewing black smoke...

We can't import diesels that were not sold her unless they are more than 25 years old. Our boarder patrol gets more excited about a diesel Smart car crossing the Detroit  - Windsor boarder than a van full of Mexicans !
