I seem to be having trouble finding the model of the engine in my 91 jetta.
Where on the engine is the id code ?
thankz

There is a flat spot at the top of the block, where it meets the head. It will be between cylinders 2 and 3. It's probably covered in grease.
1.6 NA should be ME
1.6 TD should be MF

cool stuff ! thankz for the reply.
what would a 1.9 TD be?
Its been mentioned that mine looks to be a 1.9 TD from pics I've posted.
just need to make sure so I can order my turbo oil feed line from the stealer and not get the wrong one.

You should add your location to your profile. It will help us give you more informed answers!
A 1.9TD would most likely be an AAZ. On this side of the pond at least.

ok good stuff thankz !
In Canada as well.. Toronto area.

A standard Canadian 1991 Jetta will have a 1.6l MF engine rather than the 1.9l AAZ... and the lines are definitely different, so you'll want to be sure.... dealers rarely do refunds.
Easiest way, short of finding the cryptic part number on the block, is to see how the valve cover bolts down. If it's held down with 8 bolts around the perimeter of the valve cover it's a 1.6... if there are 3 bolts in the top of the valve cover it's a 1.9.
If you can direct us to a picture or two we can probably give you the Internet's opinion.

I have since cleaned my engine since these pictures.... :P
Looks to be a 1.9 based on your explanation.
Thankz for the help.
