Title: Show me your compressors, folks
Post by: Turbinepowered on December 23, 2008, 09:02:51 am
I am once again on the hunt for an AC and alternator solution for my Fox. I got derailed once already, when I had to put a new harness in my darling, but now I am almost finished with that project and ready to move on to getting her done and on the road, hangitall. Been down for a year, I'm starting to get mad!

Anyway, I know you Em-Kay transverse guys have rotary compressors, so they should conceivably fit where I need to put them. Finding a stock AC compressor for the manifold side of the block would be cheaper than getting one welded up, and I'll just pass the model and year info on to other Foxers looking to do the same swap.

Mounting the compressor is my stumbling block, as once the compressor is mounted I can easily mount the alternator with a pair of thick angle-steel brackets, no expensive welding required. I'd use the stock Fox alternator, but I need to slide its bracket forward by 8mm, not an easy task. Bolts would interfere.

i seem to recall people trying to get smaller a/c compressors for more efficiency... but i forget which type is near bolt-on...

I cut my stock VW alternator bracket and TIG welded and extensive bracket to it to hold my Chrysler compressor bracket and a GM alternator as I did not have a VW alternator. (GM is the best bang for buck if you are starting from zero)
