Title: Installed Engine Angles

I have been wondering lately whether there was any real diference to the installation of the engine in Quantum-style cars (longitutdinal) versus Golf-style (transverse), so decided to check it out. This afternoon I braved the 105F (43C) temps here in Northern California and took measurements from my Mk1 GTI and my Quantum, using the centerlines of the cam pulley and tensioner for reference and a "Smart Level" to determine the angle.

And the results are...drum roll...  :wink:

The Golf is inclined at a 76 degree angle, 14 degrees from vertical, while the Quantum is at 78 degrees, 12 degrees from vertical. This suggests to me that an engine from either source can drop right into a chassis of either type, with no major concerns. Of course, oil pans, manifolds, turbos and lots of other detail parts may need to be changed, but the basic engines are so close as to have no fundamental differences.

usually the oil pump pickup and the oil pan is the only thing you need to swap. Otherwise the longblocks are interchangeable. I hope you didn't do all that work just for that bit of information  :D

Hey, I was bored and wanted to get out of the house for a few minutes...and it's hotter'n a mo'fo here!  :lol:

Seriously, I am considering transfering the Q's diesel into my '84 GTI to run in NASA's E3 class, and was wondering what it would take to do the engine swap. There are some items I need to get to effect this swap, but it looks like there are no major issues with the engine itself.

T3's (Vanagons to our friends accross the pond) use a 50* angle with the use of a angled sump, different pick up pipe and solid lifters and we're made from '82 on for 1.6D (CS code) '85 to '92 for the 1.7D (KY code) and '85 to'92 for the 70bhp 1.6 TD (JX code)

like mike said, chnage the oil pump and oil pan dans you're in business.

That's what I did on my Audi 3A engine (2L 8v shortbloc)

I still have no idea what head I should use on the said bloc.
