Title: Rusty springs
Post by: Mark on December 07, 2008, 11:32:06 am
I have a set of Eibachs that I need to put into service, as the H&R reds are too stiff for me.

The Eibachs are rusty, so I wire wheeled them and painted them, but they're definately pitted in some areas.

Should I use them or throw them away?

Are they likely to just fracture?

Thanks,
Mark

If this is just a daily driver, it should not be a problem. Rust will change the surface tension of the steel which makes a slight difference. Most springs are shot peened for that reason. They should be fine tho.

What is the application?

91 NA Jetta diesel.
I figured out the problem with the recently installed Koni race shocks / H&R Race springs... One of the Koni's was set to full hard.. and it was brutal.
I adjusted both to full soft, and its much better.
I probably won't swap out the H&Rs for the Eibachs.
