Title: Cracked Head
Post by: phantom59 on December 03, 2008, 02:21:58 pm
I had a mechanic tell me that the VW diesel motor has a problem with the head cracking between the valves with high mileage. Has anyone heard of this? I have never read anywhere that this is a problem in these engines.

Its very common and not a problem as long as the crack doesn't leak.

Finding a head with no cracks is rare.

I think the spec is 1mm. Just have it pressure tested and if it doesn't leak use it.

When searching be sure to check "search for ALL terms".  That will narrow it down quite a bit.

For the record, there aren't very many engines that aren't cracked there.  According to the Bentley, it's no problem as long as they aren't more than .020" wide.
