Title: Speedometer info needed
Post by: boosted_diesel_84 on November 27, 2008, 10:43:25 am
i have a MK1 1984 jetta that i think was origionally a 4 speed, its 5 now, and my speedo is off quite a bit. i have the proper gear in the tranny for my final drive, but im thinking that its off cause the cluster is setup for a 4 speed,

is this correct? if so, what cluster can i swap in that would work and fit? i would like one that goes to 120, but i will settle for whatever works. any info appreciated.

the cluster between 4 and 5 speed is the same! you just need the right speedo gear for the tranny!
Duane

EDIT also it's kinda odd that your jetta was a 4 speed all i seen were 5 speeds jetta's i wonder if your tranny was swapped at one point?

well i dont know now, i just figured it was originally a 4 speed, the tranny in it now is a ACH from an 85 Diesel, which has a 3.94 final, which will call for a white colored plastic gear in tranny, which it has, but  my speedo says i am doing 70 when in reality i am at about 55, thats why i figured it had to be a 4 speed cluster, any ideas?

also i have stock 13 steelies on it.

MK2 clusters look very similar but im pretty sure they wont work in my my 84 jetta, correct?
but what about this cluster? please dont bid because if it fits i am trying to get it, if nothing else, then to swap my stock 85 mph to the 120.

If the gear is white, then it should read properly.

Now, there may be a problem with your cluster. The needle rides on a shaft. Sometimes, the press-fit on the needle will lose it's grip, and the needle will slip and lose it's spring tension.

In the past, I have rebuilt those style speedos (I don't anymore). rebuilding required that I remove the needle to access the gears in the case. In my first few attemps, when I put the needle back on, the MPH readings were WAY off. So, I realized I needed to calibrate the needle before and after. I actually got pretty good: getting within about 1-2 MPH.

So, the moral of this long-winded story is, it may be the case that your needle is slipping on the drive-shaft, or someone screwed with your speedometer and it's now reading off.

It's not the gear, assuming you have the correct white one.

you mentioned 13" steelies, which in europe would be the right rim size but about your tyres, are they the correct size?

the overal development of the "wheel" should be the same as factory

but 70 reading for 55 seems a big difference to me

I've got the right size wheel but with dif gearbox than original (4T instead of FF) and only 10km/h out (because I haven't changed the speedo gear yet)

tires are stock size, and i checked my speed today with my new GPS, when my speedo says a little under 75 i am actually going 55 mph. so its way off, cluster has never been into, confirmed by previous owners, and i know it has the white gear, with the ACH tranny, i ordered another cluster off ebay, so i will swap it and see what happens.
