just teasing, you can't have any of these, or can you?

look out, I'm being dangerous, I'm using my brain.
*best solution is the ARP g60/1.6d 9mm rod bolt*
$120 for 8 VW bolts is too much, $35 sounds better.
$120 should get us TWO sets of ARP wav lock or pro 2000 rod bolts, but the grade of arp bolts we get go for $35 for every other brand of car, WTF?
toyota Honda mitsubishi ARP 9mm rod bolt sets are < $40
VW 1.6L diesels have 9mm rod bolts.
some other brands of cars have 9mm bolts, I have no idea if they will work in a VW rod but they might. the plan is to test fit with used OEM rod bolts from other brands of cars in VW rods first but if they fit and if the rods are getting reconditioned for a rebuild....
vw diesel 1.6L and g60 9mm
most other vw rods 8mm
honda b18c uses a 9mm rod bolt
Toyota 4AGE 9mm
toyota 22r?
ford focus, ford ZETEC 2.0L 9MM
mitsubishi 4g63 pre-1994 9mm
nissan L24 late and VG30E & VG30ET 9mm
subaru ej22 ej25 ?
this list is incomplete, do some research on your own and add to this

it doesn't fit SOOOOOO? what does it take to make it fit?

Well what could hinder them from working with our rods.
our rods have cut outs for splines. If you drilled them out would the holes be too large?
-
1.6 VW diesel rods DO NOT have cut outs for splines, the 1.6 rods have just a drilled rod bolt hole. The VW rod bolts do have splines to create an interference fit in the rods. some other bolt designs have knurling or a wave pattern to create an interference fit.
also there really is no additional space to drill the bolt holes out to a larger size.
If anyone has a Honda b18c or a Mitsubishi pre-1994 4g63 or a Toyota 22r rod bolt to take measurements from those would be likely choices.

Thank you for correcting me!
