Title: Timing on a M-TDI and AHU
Post by: avocado on November 25, 2008, 08:41:15 pm
Alrighty....I just got my M-TDI pump from Tintin and my AHU is sitting in the garage with the stock IP on it.

I am of course going to change the timing belt and all that, and I am wondering how to get the timing set correctly on the pump.  Tintin said that the timing is 1.00mm at TDC.  Is that something that is set internally on the pump, or something I have to do?

So do I just lock the cam, crank at TDC and put the IP locking pin in place and route the timing belt?

I am used to the ALH method where I have the handy Vagcom to read the timing for me, but this MTDI stuff is new!

Thanks!

Hi there,

you need one of these and an adapter:

http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=512&category_id=91&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=6

I'm sure somebody on here has done a write up on setting the timing, check out the faq maybe.

Somebody who knows will be along shortly  :)

So I can at least put the IP in place and change out the belt, right?  I will just need to finetune the IP timing after I get the engine in place.....

As far as timing gauges....will this work?  http://www.emiata.com/VWDieselGauge.htm

Sorry for all the questions, Im quite new to this...

Thanks

I don't even have to click on the link to know that gauge is inches VS mm.
You can use it as long as you do the conversion to mm.

I think 1.02= .040 on that gauge.

Yes you can install the pump with the lock pin and install the timing belt, and later you have juste to fine tune the timing with the dial gauge.

With the lock pin in place, you are very close to 1.00mm.

Thanks for the info....

Got the pump this afternoon, looks good!  Thanks Tintin!  Ill just use my ALH locking pin for the IP and go from there...

I began to tear into things.....hoping to find a machine shop open on Friday in order to enlarge that pump bracket.  Also found my motor has a cam seal leak, so Ill take care of that too.

After that, it should be ready for transplant into Sidekick.

Any chance that the stock 1Z injector pop pressures will not be compatible with this pump?

i think the 1Z breaking pressure is a bit less than the ALH... but maybe only by 20 bar or so???

1z is 180 bar, and ALH is 220 bar.
