I know an '86 is different than a '92.
 Do you want CE1 (2 plugs) ?
or the later CE2 (1 plug)?

Do you care if it has a tach or not? MPH or KPH?

I really will only use the tachometer out of it to place into my Vanagon's instrument cluster where the clock is currently located.  Please call me or pm me with how much you are willing to sell yours for.  I am ready to buy one ASAP.

I don't think that will work. The Vanagon housing for the tach is completely different AFAIK.

That's my understanding as well... iirc they are a completely different physical diameter, and the circuit boards are very different as well.

Might be worth a ping over in the Diesel Vanagon section of www.vwdieselparts.net to see what their experience has been ?

Ok.  I checked this out further with the mechanic that is helping me.  I don't know if it will work yet or not for sure but I'll let you know once installed since I already bought a tach from someone off the forum here.

Bill- The MKII tach housing is different, but I don't use the housing- I actually remove the tach itself, screw it onto the vanagon housing, and then use a vanagon instrument cluster with a tach and install it.  I have done this a few times with the gas engine tachs- I had one in my van as well.  I am pretty sure that I can make the diesel tach work as well,  the only thing that appears to be different is the signal coming in is from a different source (the alternator). instead of the ignition coil.  Can you send me a pic of the tach you bought, front and back?  It is possible that it won't fit, but even if the wiring connections are different, I think Ican change those around to make it work.
