Title: Any Mitsubishi FE Fuso 4cyl. TD- Literate Folks Here?
Post by: rich brennick on November 09, 2008, 01:37:56 pm
Just bought a light-duty 1989 Fuso FE-HD cab and chassis as a project.
Has only 89,000 miles and supposedly runs well.
It has a 4 cylinder turbo diesel, non-intercooled engine.
Non-electronic, mechanical injection pump.
4D31T   117 HP@3500   207 ft. lbs@2000  201 cubic inches

I know the similar-later engines have upwards of 145 HP.

I have access to parts from a later model, similar engine.
If I add a factory intercooler and related hoses, intake, etc.,
would power go up?  Or would I have to also change injectors
(not sure if the intercooled engines have larger nozzles to add
power)?

Can anyone chime in who is familiar with this model truck and engine?

Thanks much,
Rich/ Michigan

well a I.C. will cool charge air making it more dense! and will give a little more HP! your injectors should be fine since they should match the I.P. for pressure!  thats about all i can tell you because i'm not familiar with what you got!

I'd like to find a mechanical pump for one. My buddy has one of these trucks and its got an electrical pump on it with expensive issues to fix.

Have your buddy try this guy for parts; he parts out all Japanese cabovers and doesn't
seem to require your "first born:"

a large good flowing intercooler will definitely get you more power without any other modification

cold air = power

hot air is expanded air, expanded means fewer  oxygen molecules to burn fuel in the same volume of air

turbo compressor inlet temp 75 degrees

turbo compressor outlet temp at 20 psi about 400 degrees

after the intercooler same air would be 120 degrees

downsides

tiny intercooler  20 psi in, 12 psi out, a small intercooler would become a restriction and reduce power

large intercooler 20 psi in 19 psi out and cold, power gain from cold air.
get the biggest intercooler possible

Makes total sense to me, voodoo.
The factory intercooler on the later models are pretty big;
glad I've already spotted a wrecked "victim" to rape parts from. :D
