Title: Need turbo identification help!
Post by: wolfsburged on November 08, 2008, 05:08:00 pm
I have two TD motors, trying to identify what I've got on them.

1984 Jetta TD, factory TD.

I'm looking all over this turbo trying to find something to indicate what it is. I understand that these should be either KKK or Garret turbo, and I know what both logos look like, but I cannot find either on it.

The bottom of the inlet side does not have any logo, not the big Garret lettering like the other turbo I have, nor anything that looks like the KKK triangle...

Also I took some pictures of the fins, they look ok to me, also didn't feel like there was any play in the shaft, but what do the experts think?

cleaned it a bit:

This is on the top, looks like a part number?? Google didn't turn anything up

This almost looks like it reads "Sears"

1986 Jetta TD
I think this must be a T3?

Do these fins look slightly messed up to you?

The first turbo sez "AirResearch". The second one is a T3.  :)

So both are T3s?

Any input on the condition? Both seem to turn about the same by hand - slightly resistant, but not hard at all to turn, but certainly not totally free wheeling.

if the compressor wheel does not get close to the housing then i say run them! prolly little dry from not being used? they should loosen up better when oil runs through them!

I think the first one looks more worn,as the inducer leading edges are rounded.(maybe sandblasted from dirt)

Both are definitly T3s. There are 2 different styles, mk1 and mk2 but they are very similar. I would guess that the mk2 turbo is more effecient but I don't know for sure.

Check them for in and out play, whichever has less is the one I would use
