Title: First diesel - Extreme vibration at idle
Post by: airplanewrencher on November 08, 2008, 11:32:25 am
Just looking for another opinion, i have a 81 caddy 1.6 non turbo. My problem is at idle, especially when cold there is a crazy vibration. My thoughts are engine mounts.

Vibration almost disappears as soon as you bring it even barely above idle. Once the engine is warm it is not near that bad when at idle.

And when i say a crazy vibration, i mean you could hardly have a normal conversation with a passenger.

Thanks for your input.

I think I know the vibration you mean, wikdslo's car will rattle your fillings out at idle.

It could be:

too low of an idle speed
bad motor mounts
bad injectors
a dead cylinder - glowplugs, ring, valve etc
incorrect timing

or a combination of any of the above. I'm sure there are more possibilites as well

I had the same vibration when I got my car and I set the idle up and changed the mounts.  That took care of most of it.  Start with the easiest things first, Burn's got a good list.

I blame the passenger side motor mount,... but you have to pull the injection pump bracket to change it.
Make sure to get the HD bushing, looks like this: http://www.techtonicstuning.com/showpart.asp?partnum=199.120

The 5 holer doesn't last as long.
