Title: intermediate shaft seal

Have an oil leak at the intermediate shaft and need to replace the seal. Couple of questions.
1) best way to remove the pulley
2) Bentley says use tool 10-203 to install new seal.
     - Is this tool available to rent somewhere ?
     - Is ther a reasonable reasonable option to using 10-203 ?
3) Is there anything else I should consider inspecting or changing while torn down for this job ?

Hi there,

I did it this way when I replaced the whole pulley:

- Took off the front mount
- Let the engine lean forward untill the pulley could come out through the passenger side (removing the wheel arch lining).
- Take off pulley (2 bolts).. and so on.

Last time I did the intermediate shaft oil seal, I just unbolted the seal carrier from the block. "Pressed" the old seal out with a pair of sockets and a vise, then pressed the new seal in with the same method.

You need one socket that's the same size as the seal (outer diameter) and one socket that's bigger than that, so you can press it out. To press it in you just need the smaller socket.

Remember to replace the carrier gasket, as well.

Yes. that's how I did/do it only I
   used two blocks of wood, one on
   each side of the seal carrier/seal,
   and pressed the seal in with a vise.

   Easy to do and quite effective.

Thanks for the advise. I'll give that a try.
