Looks very stout and crash worthy in a demolition derby. I didn't notice the "why" part... that is the design goals. Are you looking to drive in NYC or Detroit and don't want to get squished, or are you using the heavy full cage because you have it?  (Understanding fully the personal value of having something no one else has !!!)

I drive 40 miles each way to work through deer country. If I ever take one on I want it to go up and over. Also, if I ever go end over end I don't want my head to drag along the ground. And, lastly, the circle track car I cut up to make this had a nice cage and it seemed like a shame not to use it.

that is a SICK ride. And since we're sorta on the top of bizarre vw's as you've very elegantly shown 914turboford.

Duane, i didn't know you had a type three!
there is a yellow type 3 rusting on my street under a cloth. poor thing  :(
If anyone is interested in it i can contact the owner. It hasn't moved in the 10 years i've lived here.
I think it's a type three anyways... is this a type three?

That's so cool

The only thing that scares me is the fuel tanks location

How long have you been working on it for?

It is coming up on a year since I started working on it. I actually began building a reverse trike with a Honda 750cc drivetrain. I decided to go with a four wheeler because I came to the conclusion that it would handle better, be safer, maybe faster, and cheaper in the long run. MC parts are pretty expensive compared to car parts. Also, being a diesel, it is still exempt from smog testing in California, as it would have been as an RT. I am not too concerned about the fuel tank sitting next to me as it will be holding diesel. I guess you can get diesel to ignite but you have to get it pretty hot, like on the exhaust, which is way behind me. But maybe I should be more concerned?

diesel doesn't burn as much as it explodes. I think you can actually put out a fire with diesel fuel...   :P (that's probably not true but it is really hard to get it to burn at standard temp. & pressure)
you'd have to get it VERY  hot.
I wouldn't worry personally.

all it needs is a heat source hot enough, and it'll burn burn burn!!!  but yes, it could put out small flames.  at your next bon fire try splashing some on the fire   the hot cinders will make it burn, and it will put out some SERIOUS btu's!!!  i was about 5 feet away from the fire and it was still burning my face a bit... and we only poured about 1/4 litre.

I poured 3 gallons on a camp fire once - It only caused it to smoke. It did not put out the fire, nor catch fire. It was the typical camp fire that had just started a few minutes before.

I was also going to make a 3 wheeler with my TD, but I need a daily driver than can also haul my family, that and like he already had the cage, I already had the minivan.

To be perfectly legal in Michigan, I need to re-title it as an "Assembled vehicle" - because the EPA delegates how the emission laws on vehicles are administered to each state. Lucky for me, the testing stopped in my county a few years back..

I also had a type 3 fastback  1971   fuel injected  ...

the front torsion bars kept breaking  ... a common problem ... it was very expensive to fix at the time and gave up when the computer fried and was quoted 1200.00 to replace it ( back in the eary 80's )

great ride fully loaded , 35 MPG  fully loaded, just no heat in winter.
