Title: Pulling Turbo on 1.9 AAZ - Any Precautions?
Post by: dosma on June 27, 2005, 08:14:15 pm
Tomorrow I will pull my turbo (kkk I think) on an engine with only 2k miles on it.  I'm pulling it to remove a stud that broke off inside the turbo exhaust port flange.  Looks like it will involve removing three bolts to the exhaust manafold, a couple of hoses to air intake and to intake manifold and a couple of oil lines.  I've bought a gasket and new studs and nuts from VW for reassembly. I plan on using high temp antisieze on the nuts.

I'm new to turbos.  This will be my first time removing one.  Any precaustions  that I should know about?

Cleanliness is important, particularly with regard to the oil supply. Cap the feed line and the oil ports on the turbo as soon as the lines are removed. Keep the compressor inlet and outlet clean or covered as well, any dirt that gets in there will have to go through the motor to get out. The exhaust side is pretty sturdy, just don't leave any large rocks or hardware in there  :D . When you reinstall you will want to idle the engine for a few minutes to make sure oil has reached the turbo before loading the engine.

Thanks for the comments QuickTD.  I'll give time for oil to reach the turbo before loading or reving the engine after reinstallation.  Something came up and I haven't taken the turbo off yet. I'll give a report after I've done the work or if I have questions before completing the job.
