Title: worn out motor mounts, or is it
Post by: James8485 on October 09, 2008, 08:41:30 am
anyways been i think getting worse over the past year, if you grab the valve cover and try to move the engine back and forth it rocks pretty good just using your hands i dont know how much play should be there?
as well when driving if i on highway and just let off gas doing 118 you can feel the motor move, like i dont do this just for the fin but if im drive and give it gas then let off then give it gas the let off you can just hear "clunk, clunk, clunk as you accel and de accel

does this cause any damage if this is what i think it is (motor mounts)
being or having some play in them?

my bro told me with the 1.6TD if they get bad you have problems putting them in certain gears, i dont have that problem but as it feels pretty loose up there i dont want to reck anything untill i can get it fixed!!!

The motor mounts should allow SOME play, how far does it move when you push on the valve cover? Like an inch, or a foot?

I bought a 81 1.6 NA and when I was underneath it checking things out I noticed that I was missing a nut on the center mount (right next to the shift linkage) and the other nut was loose and about to fall off. So I took the loose nut off and went a got a match. Put some gasket maker on the first couple threats and torqued the nuts down. I must have out of whack because now it's near impossible to find first gear so I think it will at least affect that, if not do more serious damage.

Ya sounds like it's time fr new mounts.

Front one is EASY to change as is the pass rear one, the one on the trans side is a bit harder just due to the extra stuff that is in the way.

pretty easy to tell if its the front.  if the car shakes when in reverse or clunks or is even hard to get into reverse then you know its the front   mine was so hard to drive in reverse.. damn thing loved shaking and rocking   put in the passat solid mount (more vibrations) but lasts forever! good mod IMO.

prothe sells some cheap mounts on his site... i wonder how long they would last, as they are damn cheap compared to dealer prices!!!

I just bought one of prothe's mounts - it looks to be about the same quality as any other motor mount I've ever bought.  Don't have it in yet but I guess time will tell.  Nothing obviously wrong with it anyhow...

true statement, clunk when accelerating and when you let off the gas.
the solid rubber mk4 bushing is a nice upgrade.

jtanguay pretty much describes how to tell which motor mounts is no good.
