Title: Adjustable Cam Gear on a 1.6L TD or D?
Post by: VW_Commuter on October 06, 2008, 02:37:17 pm
Anyone ever tried it?  Seems like it would make timing much easier.

It would have to be for a 16v right? I've thought about it, because I want to play around with cam timing a bit

you can play with timing with the stock setup, its tricky, but not impossible like with the gasser (keyed)

I would love to find an adjustable gasser sprocket with the correct diesel belt width (1.1" sprocket for the 1" belt)

What's the belt width for the 8v & 16V motors?

I was thinking about this because it would give you the security of the key and the ability to set our timing a little easier like the gasser guys.  I've seen some pretty nice adjustable cam gears for sale over on the vortex and just started to kick the idea around in my head.

one could turn a stock diesel one to adjustable, using the key as added security.

I know for sure a 8v is too narrow. I'll measure up a 16V one when I get a chance

Tyler, you ever get a chance to measure the width of the 16V adjustable cam gear?

would be interesting to know of any gains...  i know on gassers you can suffer on low end but gain on top end with this.  for a diesel i wonder if you can gain low end but lose top end, which our stock motors don't have much of to begin with...

The 16v cam gear will not work. The cogs on the belt don't mesh properly. Already tried it. I'm in the process of cutting the tapered end off of a junk diesel cam. I plan to machine out the inside to a press fit tolerance and run a gasser cam. During all this i plan to make it adjustable.

When doing the timing belt on our 84 rabbit i tried moving the cam a little. I advanced it and it was not happy with that. It made lots of intake noise but didn't have power. So i retarded it and that is how it is. Nothing major noticed good or bad.

Hmmm, I really wasn't looking to change the timing but just to make it easier to get it timed right on and also prevent the possibility of the cam gear from slipping on the cam itself.

I guess I won't measure the belt thickness then. Thanks :)

Me too    last winter, the stupid part was it was about my fifth time popping the gear off. :x $50 bucks for a reground one, and a week of down time. My problem was that I only loosened the bolt about half a turn, after it busted I needed a wrench to get the bolt all the way off so it must have tightened itself again......
