Title: MK2 TD Can't find reverse!!
Post by: 85gti on October 06, 2008, 12:12:40 pm
Hey guys I am not really new to the MK2 but this is a new problem for me. I just bought a winter sled and it won't go into reverse.  I assume it still has reverse because I need to put it all the way to the left (where reverse should be) to get into 1st.  Isn't there a shift tool thing that is needed to line up the gears?  Can I just adjust the shifter?  If so how do I go about doing it?  Thanks in advance.

It's simple to adjust. Just jack up the car. In the exhaust tunnel you will see a rod coming out from the heat shield that goes back to the shifter box. At the front end of the rod it will go through a bushing and there will be a clamp at the end of the rod. Loosen the bolt on the clamp completely loose, put the shifter in reverse and manually shift the tranny into reverse. Then tighten the clamp.

You might have to play around a bit to get the alignment right. Also, it will take a few minutes to find reverse on the tranny. I can't remember of the top of my head which side you have the move the linkage but I "think" it's all the way to the driver's side and back. Remember, its a 4 x 2 gear pattern (R,1,3,5) x (2,4) so reverse will be in the 4 gear line. I am making this sound more complicated than it should be. You'll figure it out.

You are awesome!!  I will try that as soon as I get back to fixing the beast.  Thanks again.
