Title: Insane miles
Post by: smutts on September 30, 2008, 01:01:26 pm
Due to present financial situation I am having to do a 160 mile commute at 80mph every day with a 155,000 mile 1990 Golf GTD. Job lasts till Christmas, anyone care to predict when she will grenade?
Who else has daft commute mileages or "inappropriate" cars doing sterling service?  8)

run a good synthetic oil and keep it to halfway on the dipstick otherwise the top half will just get lost with blowby at those speeds.

make sure the car is warmed up before hitting 80mph (doesnt have to be up to running temp, just enough so that the oil is flowing good) and make sure the turbo has a chance to cool down before you shut it down.

i see no reason why the motor wouldn't be able to take those speeds.  i've been at 100 mph with my first diesel jetta.. that thing was solid!  the turbo loved the high speed and the transmission was geared perfect! the only problem was oil consumption, and the fact that new rings were put in the motor which i didn't know i had to give them time to break in   during one trip i burnt up about a litre of diesel (dino diesel) in about half an hour.  i also got the car up to about 110 mph for short spurts keeping up with some of the larger vehicles, and i think they must have had their foot to the floor trying to get away from my '*** box'   i wasn't brave enough to push any harder though.

Commuting all the way across the island, eh?

I love my commute. 1.2 miles to the bus stop, 7 miles from the stop to the city core, 1 mile by bike to the transit office. Drive a bus for eight hours, bike 13 miles home. :D

Amen to that, it also helps to prevent the heads from cracking. A mate of mine has a BMW, lives 30 yards from the dual carraigeway, at the bottom of a long hill, starts the car stone cold and is at 90mph thirty seconds later.
He was wondering why he has cracked four cylinder heads....

....................I have a theory!

Put
at the end of the text you want to quote, that tells the forum software you're done quoting someone else and want to speak on your own.

If you're using the "Quote" button, it does it for you automatically, just start typing your own text after that
bit.

Remember these things were designed to run on the Autobahn, so sustained high speeds aren't as crazy as it might seem at first.

As long as your oiling and cooling systems are in good order, I see no reason why 160MI @ 80MPH would be a problem. Actually I would be worse off than the car... I would move, or find a new job if I had that kind of commute.  :P

Until a few years ago: 370 km round trip (20 times over 6 weeks, not every day) on a 92 NA with 525000 on her.
Now 166km round trip on a 90 Jetta TD with 497670km on the clock.

There is no other car to commute in; unless you own an helo. That's why I love these little chicks.

140km a day @ (120km/h) 70mph on my '94 CLi AAZ Golf, CHD tranny code (3200rpm cruise).

I get consistent 5.8l/100km on B100 from a servo.... freeway has a good few grades that i stick at 120 all the way up - k14 20psi. EGT's stay under 400C.

I use about 0.75l oil between each 6000km interval. Semi synthetic 15W-50 (Penrite HPR Diesel)

I actually enjoy my commute, ya know they say "Drivers Wanted" well I'm a Driver for sure.

I've been making this 124 mile commute for over 4 years and I'm still not tired of it and I think allot of it is because I enjoy my cars.
I was starting to get tired of it back when I was stuck in a Saturn which was a really nice car but it just had no personality at all. Then I picked up this mk2 and my old mk3 at about the same time and remembered all the fun i had WAY back when I had an mk1 4dr Rabbit and a mk1 2dr NA Jetta. Those were the days.

I do 84 miles(135km) a day in a 1985 Jetta TD... The odometer on the beast stopped at ~160,000 miles(~257000km) about 3 years ago. So I estimate the body has close to 225,000 miles(362,000km) on it. The engine was re-ringed about 50,000 miles ago.

I am averaging about 500 miles on a tank of fuel... Which usually takes just over 10 gallons... So mileage is in the upper 40's. I do drive like a grandpa tho... Try to keep it 65 or under.

I love my little beater =)

I'm currently doing around 132 miles round trip everyday in my '06 Golf TDI.  I've had my Golf for 3 years now and have 95K miles on it and still consistently get 42mpg.  As soon as I get my Jetta on the road I'm going to be driving that and the wife is going to start driving the Golf (her commute is like 10 miles round trip) and we will be parking her Silverado with the Duramax (can you say ouch for fuel costs).  I'm really looking forward to getting my Jetta on the road so I can possibly get a 'Smoke Tale' to tell, you can't make a Pumpe Deuse TDI smoke in stock form for anything if it's an auto trans.

113 miles daily commute to work.
200 miles from my apartment and back on visitation weekend, when i get to pick up my boys. total of around 4 hours drive on friday night, and again on sunday afternoon after their visitation with me is over. happens two weekends in one month. [400 total miles every visitation weekend ]
i only have to wake the engine up on steep hills, otherwise it yawns at 70mph. and 45mpg on B20.

91 NA--265,000 miles-head never been off it. 80 mile a day commute. Gets around 45 mpg on veg. Best advice to Mk2 owners-find a set of Recaro seats!
