ok so i'm looking for fuel efficiency, the transmission is my gasser. at 100kph on the highway i'm running 3300RPM...whats the best transmission for the car?

I have the CHD tranny in my Golf and I rev at 2600 rpm at 100kph and 3000 rpm at 120kph.

020 Diesel tranny should do too. When you hit 3000rpm, it just hits 110km/h.

if you have hydraulic clutch then yes. also cable shift. AFAIK it *should* just bolt right in

No hydraulic clutch...and i have to find one

you could just buy the master cyl if you're good with metal. getting the linkage to work just right could be tricky... then all you need to do is fab up some line to go from the master cyl to the slave cyl on the tranny and voila!

I think that the 02A is a good possibility for me as well. I head about some kind of modified 02A as well somewhere else, where some gears were changed. It will probably be a challenge to get it to fit in an mk1 chassis, and not to mention it has to marry with an 1.6 td/aaz frankenmotor. Any advice would be helpful.

FWIW, I run larger tires 185/70R14 on the Passat, brings it down to 3000rmp @ 115kph. Actually makes the car look better, the stock low pro look too small for the car. I've seen this done on mk3's as well. Go find a used tire guy, they are a common size and try 2 in the front!

Code FF or 4t ( chd ) with a Peloquin is your best option if you want to do it once..
CHD Trans are later with 100 mm out put flanges
FF code 1.6 diesel flanges are 90 MM
You can have axles made up with 100 mm inners and 90 mm outers or do the swap yourself
I had to machine my spindles when I did mine , I added new G60 calipers and rotors front and rear, did the MkII pedal swap for the 25mm master cylinder.
Finished with all new S/S hardlines..
What you spend now is something you wont to do over later..

if you wanna go for ease of use and simplicity, swap in an ACN or AGS out of an econo box mk2 jetta. ive got an ACN and it cruises at around 2700 @ 70 mph. great cruisin trans. the jump from 4th to fifth is pretty big tho, so beware. but those are decent trannies with 3.67 final drives and .75 fifth gear. and the best part, most of them are already 100mm equipped.
