Title: Alternator Belt Replacement 1983 Quantum Help!!
Post by: tyluk on September 16, 2008, 02:07:12 pm
Hello. This is my first post here and I'm hoping to find some answers. I just drove my Quantum 1.6L Turbo Diesel with AC and PS from New Jersey to Colorado. When I hit Denver the alternator belt broke. I got it to my house now but can figure out how to get the ac belt off to get the alternator belt on behind it. I took out as many bolts as I could find (hopefully that was not a mistake) but the ac still won't move. What am I doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have any pictures I'm a great visual learner :)

Pull the crank pully, 4 bolts, easy to get to,.. that should drop the AC belt.
On a "normal" VW diesel I usually pull the waterpump pully,.. I can't remember for sure how the quantum is set up for belts but I bet it goes around the crank pully  :)

I've never been around Quantums before, but wouldn't there be the two cap screw bolts at the pivot point that he is missing????

They are hard to see on the transverse engines a lot of the time. If that is the problem....don't forget to tighten them when you are done or they will jump ship with the vibration.
