I don't understand why it's such an issue here. This is the only forum I frequent that gets spammed like this. How do other sites prevent it?

phpBB is a free forum software so you cant expect it to be great. They may have some new upgrades out thought that may help a little. Many other sites pay pretty good amounts of money for their forum software. I think even then it still could be a problem.

Tyler I wonder if implementing a passphrase-based signup like Jack's forum uses would help, or do these folks create their own accounts no matter what ?

There is a new version (http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/) of the phpBB software, version 3.0.2 which was released on 7/10/08 and it has a bunch of new features. It might be worth looking at upgrading.

i wish you could vote for posts to be deleted so that if the moderators don't find it for a while the votes may just do it for them

I know I'm a bit late, but...
Porn spammers actually don't care whether you look at their porn.
What they care about is whether Google indexes the site, and has a high pagerank. If so, then if they can get a porn spam link on there without getting noticed, they get the pagerank of the site they're spamming for increased a lot.
And, the bigger sites get hit just as hard - they just have more moderators to nuke the spam as quickly as possible. Also, most other forum software packages (including phpBB 3.x, actually) have automated post report functions that send e-mails to all moderators when a post is reported by a user.
